In the past, both the CPU and GPU would have static power limits defined by the OEM, say for example 45 watts for an Intel i7 and maybe 90 watts for a Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q. With dynamic boost, if the game being run is GPU heavy and bottlenecked by the graphics, the system can automatically shift power budget from the CPU over to the GPU, resulting in higher performance. This should work both ways too, so if a game is more processor heavy it should be able to pull power away from the GPU and the processor will get that boost. I believe currently this only works in games, adjustments are made on a per-frame basis.
Max-Q dynamic boost works with both 20 and 16 series graphics options, but...]]>

I’m testing with the Gigabyte Aero 17 XB laptop, so we’ve got RTX 2070 Super Max-Q graphics. I’ve chosen to test with this laptop as the Gigabyte control center software lets us swap between running the GPU at 80 or 90 watts, a feature that not many actually have. Most laptops you buy either come stuck at 80 or 90 watts and you can’t change it. More power will generally equal more performance, and when you see laptops with Max-Q graphics for sale they don’t advertise the power limits, so unless you check reviews like mine and find out the limits, it’s basically russian roulette. We’ll start out looking at the games, then compare thermals, clock speed, power draw and pr...]]>

The MSI GS66 Stealth is a gaming laptop available with some powerful specs while still remaining on the thinner and sleeker side, let’s check it out in this detailed review and see what improvements they’ve made over the older GS65.
My GS66 is one of the highest specced options available, there’s an Intel i9-10980HK overclockable 8 core processor, Nvidia RTX 2080 Super Max-Q graphics, 32gb of memory in dual channel, though not running at the DDR4-2933 speeds 10th gen is capable of, a 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD, and a 15.6” 1080p 300Hz screen. For network connectivity it’s got 2.5 gigabit ethernet, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.
The GS66 is available with different specs though. The laptop is made out of aluminium on the lid, interior and bottom. The lid is a clean matte black, and same on the inside. The whole device is pretty much black with the exception of the silver MSI logo below the screen, which is too bad as even the last gen GS65 had that blacked out. There...]]>

Let’s start with what Nvidia’s got coming down the pipeline, as honestly it’s more interesting compared to 14nm plus plus plus.
So we’ve got some new laptop GPUs, well more like refreshed I suppose.
There are going to be Super versions of the 2070 and 2080, which have higher CUDA core counts. The clock speeds with the Super versions are actually down slightly. There’s more to it than that though.
Interestingly, the boost clock of the 2070 is a little different compared to what Nvidia had previously on their website. Same with the 2060, previously the maximum power was 90 watts, now it’s up to 115 watts with a higher boost.
There’s also the new GTX 1650 Ti which should slot in between the GTX 1650 and 1660 Ti. Something in between these makes sense, as the 1660 Ti is 50% faster than the 1650 from my own testing, and the Radeon 5500M from AMD fits in b...]]>
