Among the published data were Intel's private keys, which were used to sign the firmware released by MSI and to ensure secure boot using Intel Boot Guard. The presence of firmware signing keys makes it possible to generate correct digital signatures for a fake or modified firmware. Boot Guard keys allow bypassing the mechanism of launching only verified components at the initial boot stage, which can be used, for example, to compromise the UEFI Secure Boot mechanism.
The firmware signing keys affect at least 57 MSI products, and the Boot Guard keys affect 166 MSI products. It is assumed that the Boot Guard keys are not limited to compromising MSI products and can also be used for attac...]]>

The most obvious change is of course the use of new hardware. The GE76 makes use of Nvidia’s latest RTX 3000 series graphics which should mean more performance in games. My model has the RTX 3060 with 8 gig of VRAM, but there are also 3070 and 3080 options too depending on the size of your wallet.
In addition to more GPU power with Ampere over Turing, this brings more Nvidia features including Reflex for reducing latency in games, and should also offer improved ray tracing performance. This is an engineering sample, so the final GE76 may differ a bit from what I’m showing here, ...]]>

I think the most interesting model is the new GE76, which is basically a larger 17 inch version of the 15 inch GE66 from last year. It’s still using Intel 10th gen processors as 11th gen isn’t available yet, but also no AMD Ryzen 5000 here. It’s available with Nvidia RTX 3080 or 3070 graphics, so should be quite a capable gaming machine.
I’ve actually had some hands on time with an engineering sample of the GE76, so I’ll go into more details in a dedicated review.
MSI GE66 + RTX 3000
The smaller 15” GE66 has also been refreshed with Nvidia 3060, 3070 or 3080 graphics. The GE66 also moves from Wi-Fi 6 to the latest Wi-Fi 6E, though that’s only going to be useful with access points that also support the newer 6E too. That’s basically none today, but you’ve got to start somewhere, and it’s good to see MSI putting these...]]>

It’s got a 27 inch 16 by 9 IPS panel with a 1440p resolution and an anti-glare matte finish. It’s flat too, so no curve here. It’s got a 165Hz refresh rate, and MSI are claiming a 1ms GTG response time. Combined with adaptive sync, meaning you can use either FreeSync with a Radeon graphics card or G-Sync with Nvidia, it’s got some nice sounding features for gaming that I’ll put to the test. Personally I think 27 inches at 1440p is a great sweet spot for gaming, 1080p at 27 inches is a bit too stretched out in my opinion and the pixels are less obvious to notice here comparatively.
It feels a bit smaller to me personally, but that’s because I normally use 32” 4K monitors, ...]]>

It’s got a matte carbon grey exterior both on top, bottom and for the interior. The aluminum build feels pretty good, only minor keyboard and lid flex when going out of my way to look for it, and like the GS66 this has MSI’s new and improved hinge design. The weight distribution felt good, allowing for one finger opening. The screen goes the full 180 degrees back, and the F12 key has a shortcut for flipping the screen for sharing. MSI lists the weight as 2.1kg or 4.6lb, though mine was heavier than this. We’re looking at 2.8kg or about 6.2lb with the 180 watt power brick and cables included.
It’s not too big for a 15” laptop and is under 2cm thick, making it fairly portable. My...]]>

Microsoft flight simulator was tested in the Sydney landing challenge. This is quite the resource heavy test, but high end settings weren't too terrible, medium was much better though, while the low-end preset was just below 60 fps. The lid is a matte silver metal, while the interior is a darker more blue colour, but also metal finish. Overall build quality feels above average, and there aren’t any sharp corners or edges. MSI lists the weight as 2.38kg, and mine was just slightly above this. With the 230 watt power brick and cables for charging the total rises to 3.3kg or 7.3lb. The GE66 isn’t too large, perhaps a little deeper than some others and a bit over 2cm thick, so while not thin, it’s not big either. I’ve got the 10SEK configuration, which has some decent specs for a gaming laptop, but there are a few different configurations available. The lid is a matte black metal, the interior is the same, while the bottom is plastic. Overall build quality felt fair, and there were no sharp corners or edges anywhere. The weight is listed at 2.3kg, though mine was closer to 2.2kg. With the 230w power brick and cables for charging the total rises to almost 3.2kg, or 7lb.
The GL65 is on the thicker side for a gaming laptop with this hardware inside, however the width and depth are reasonable for a 15” machine, and this smaller footprint allows for 7.5mm screen bezels on the sides. Air comes in through the vents underneath towards the backand is exhausted out of the back cornersand on the left and right sides towards the back.Inside there are a couple of fans, as well as two heatpipes that cross over to the other side. They’re not strictly shared in the sense that the pipes don’t touch both CPU and GPU, and it looks like we’ve got some nice VRM coverage. Too nice perhaps, my unit appears to have an overflow of pasteit doesn’t look like a factory application so might just be my review unit, I’m not sure, but it could potentially affect the results a little.

The 10SFK model I’ve got has an Intel 10th gen i7-10750H processor, 115 watt Nvidia RTX 2070 graphics, no Super here, 16gb of memory in dual channel, however MSI have chosen to use slower DDR4-2666 rather than 2933 which the 10th gen supports. The MSI GS66 Stealth is a gaming laptop available with some powerful specs while still remaining on the thinner and sleeker side, let’s check it out in this detailed review and see what improvements they’ve made over the older GS65.
My GS66 is one of the highest specced options available, there’s an Intel i9-10980HK overclockable 8 core processor, Nvidia RTX 2080 Super Max-Q graphics, 32gb of memory in dual channel, though not running at the DDR4-2933 speeds 10th gen is capable of, a 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD, and a 15.6” 1080p 300Hz screen. For network connectivity it’s got 2.5 gigabit ethernet, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.
The GS66 is available with different specs though. The laptop is made out of aluminium on the lid, interior and bottom. The lid is a clean matte black, and same on the inside. Which graphics should you pick in your next laptop? The Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti, or the Radeon RX 5500M from AMD? In this comparison we’ll take a look at the differences in gaming performance, rendering, video exporting, power draw, thermals, price and more to help you decide which is worth it.
Let’s take a look at how the laptop GTX 1660 Ti and RX 5500M differ in terms of specs. Things like clock speeds, CUDA cores and Stream Processors aren’t directly comparable simply due to architecture differences. It’s worth noting that the 5500M has 4GB of GDDR6 memory, while the 1660 Ti has 6GB and the 5500M has a higher power limit at 85 watts.
The reason I’m comparing these two is because there’s quite a big performance gap between the Nvidia 1650 and 1660 Ti, until a 1650 Ti or similar comes out, the 5500M fills the gap between these options.
To do this comparison, I’ve got the ASUS TUF FX505DU and MSI Alpha 15. Both laptops have the same Ryzen 7 3...]]>

Intel is launching their 10th gen desktop processors, so let’s check out what new chips are coming, find out more about the new XTU settings and features, and see what the Z490 platform is going to offer us.
First up let’s check out the new processors that Intel will be offering with 10th gen Comet Lake-S. We’ve got the 10 core 20 thread i9-10900K at the top of the stack, it’s got a 5.3GHz single core turbo boost speed however that’s with thermal velocity boost, so will only get hit if thermals are in check. Down from that is the i7-10700K, an 8 core 16 thread part which in a way would essentially replace the 9900K from 9th gen. Unlike the 9th gen i7 though, it’s got hyperthreading. The price Intel has listed here is $374 USD, but it’s worth noting these prices are when buying 1000 units in bulk and not what you’ll end up paying from the store. These parts are also listed with a 125 watt TDP, and while I doubt most would run these wi...]]>

After skimming the Plundervolt whitepaper it sounds like the bug is exploited through the software’s ability to apply undervolting. With the Gigabyte laptops I tested I didn’t see a way of doing that in the BIOS, and by default the GS66 doesn’t offer this either, that is until you enter the advanced mode, which is as easy as pressing Right Shift + Right Control + Left Alt + F2, obviously.
