The idea of accessing your accounts without explicitly entering your login credentials may sound like something halfway between bizarre and just an outright bad idea, but when you really think about it and look at what Google is implementing, it's not that far off from how we already deal with saved passwords.
Core to this concept is the idea of a "passkey" — a digital record connecting your personal information with a particular service, securely signed via chain of trust, and stored on a device like your phone....]]>

Google and partners have been pushing hard for Android to eventually become a 64-bit-only platform, and it looks like the company may have passed a landmark with the Pixel 7 series.
Esper editor Mishaal Rahman revealed on Reddit that the Google Pixel 7 series might be the first 64-bit-only Android smartphones. This comes after several users reported that they were unable to sideload some apps on their new Pixels.
Rahman asked an XDA-Developers writer to sideload once-popular game Flappy Bird (which is only available as a 32-bit APK) but the writer received a system message noting that the game “isn’t compatible with your phone.”
We tried sideloading the title on a Pixel 7 Pro review unit too and received the same error (see the first image below). However, the game was installed without issue on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (see the second image).

When Meta announced that its Horizon Worlds avatars were getting legs in the near future, we got to see VR Mark Zuckerberg jump up and down to show them off. Apparently, though, what we saw wasn't a real demonstration of how Meta was able generate their full-body virtual reality avatars. According to UploadVR editor, Ian Hamilton, the event used animations that were created using motion captureThe process, which is called mocap for short, is widely used in cinema and games and entails recording the movements of a real person or object so they can be turned into computer animated graphics.
During the event, Meta said that "legs have been one of the most requested features on [its] roadmap, and it’s been a significant area of [the company's] focus." Indeed, the addition of legs to Horizon's legless avatar would be a noteworthy achievement due to the technological constraints of the VR devic...]]>

Microsoft has been gradually updating its Seeing AI app since its launch in 2017, expanding language support and general functionality over the years. Today, the company is announcing a new feature that would let Seeing AI read out detailed information when users scan the barcodes of products by healthcare company Haleon. The feature is rolling out today for US and UK users on the free app, which is only available on iOS. The company says an Android version will be available "in the future."
In a press release, Microsoft and Haleon said "With today’s launch in honor of World Sight Day, people can now hear packaging information through the Microsoft Seeing AI app by scanning the barcode of Haleon products." Users who are blind, have trouble reading or have low literacy can use the app to scan more than 1,500 Haleon products like Advil, Excedrin, Theraflu, Emergen-C and more, and their device will read out product informat...]]>

The world of Android looks different than when I started focusing on this platform over ten years ago. Gone are the days of Google focusing on its developer-centric devices, allowing other manufacturers to compete for the top spot. If you look around the U.S. market, Android seems to have developed a homogeny akin to that of Apple’s iPhone. If you’re choosing a flagship Android smartphone, it’s now between Google and Samsung—maybe OnePlus if you’re sick of the status quo and know an alternative exists.
The Google Pixel exists as a specific flavor of Android, just the way Samsung’s rolled with it all this time. You’re not getting a stock version of the operating system anymore: you’re getting a version of Android made in Google’s image, complete with Material You stylings and exclusive feature drops. The idea is that i...]]>

Based on recent supply chain surveys, here’s what Kuo predicts…
The changes include shifting more iPhone production to India, as well as moving more MacBook production and assembly to Thailand. While these moves will take years to complete, Kuo says the US market could be entirely supplied by assembly non-China locations within 3-5 years:

The Nasdaq and S&P 500 hit fresh bear market lows Tuesday. The Dow Jones led an intraday rally, but the major indexes faded to mostly negative by the close. Chip stocks continue to sell off in the wake of weak demand and U.S. controls on China sales. Tesla (TSLA) extended its sharp slide.
Investors should be on the sidelines, entirely or nearly all in cash.
On Wednesday morning, the Labor Department will release the producer price index, a warm-up for Thursday's consumer price index. Meanwhile, Fed minutes from the September policy meeting will be out Wednesday afternoon.

Apple’s newest phone has been automatically calling emergency services from the pockets of people riding rollercoasters in the US, mistaking the bumps and jerks of the rides as car crashes.
The latest iPhone 14, as well as newer Apple watches, includes a feature that detects the signs and vibrations typical of a serious car accident – and calls 911 if the owner does not respond to a prompt to cancel.
Since the new model went on sale in September, the Warren County 911 communications centre in Ohio received at least six crash-detection calls from people on rides, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

This was quite the read over the weekend: the Wall Street Journal reported that the car crash detection feature built into the new iPhone 14/14 Pro and Apple Watches is sensitive enough to be set off by a roller coaster.
It happened to a family at Kings Island, an amusement park in Ohio. After only two days on the job, the iPhone 14 Pro dispatched emergency services when the device sensed Sara White, the person profiled in the WSJ piece, suddenly stop after flying through the air at 50 miles per hour on the Mystic Timbers rollercoaster. When the ride was over, White faced a lock screen populated with notifications indicating her phone had called for help.
Rollercoasters usually have a brake run that stops the coaster abruptly before it’s slowed down to enter back into the loading area. “Many parks will advertise the acceleration, but they don’t say you are going to go from 40 mph t...]]>

The embargo lifts today on Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 and it's a phenomenal achievement in graphics performance - as you might hope and expect from a $1600/£1650 GPU. The full Eurogamer review will follow as soon as possible but so much work in Digital Foundry has been poured into this project that we've only just managed to finish the video review in time. With minutes left until the embargo lifts, I wanted to share the review with the Eurogamer audience - and to offer up some personal thoughts on the product.
First of all, I think it is important to stress that the power level of this product shows a leap in performance that surrounding components within a gaming PC may struggle to fully access. 1080p and 1440p metrics with this product are essentially meaningless - even with my Core i9 12900K overclocked to 5.2GHz on all performance cores, I'm finding frame-rates hitting the CPU lim...]]>

You may hear norovirus illness be called “food poisoning,” “stomach bug,” or “stomach flu.” Although noroviruses are the leading cause of foodborne illness, other germs and chemicals can also cause foodborne illness.

Looking at the Pixel Watch, it really does feel like Google decided to give some folks the circular Apple Watch they’ve been clamoring for. It’s got the curved glass display, a minimalist and techy feel, a digital crown, and a flat side button. Those elements aren’t unique to Apple Watches, but they serve similar functions here. That said, even with the Apple-esque design, it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb when you put it next to the Buds and Pixel 7. It very much feels like it fits within the Pixel family.
The new Wear OS 3.5 UI also feels like it’s taken some cues from Apple’s watchOS....]]>

The arrival of new Google Pixel phones is always a big moment for point-and-shoot snapping – and so it's proved again with the launch of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
While the new flagships don't have a headline moment quite as big as the Pixel 3's introduction of 'Night Sight', they do bring a combination of exciting hardware and software upgrades that could fire them into the upper echelons of our best camera phones guide.
The basic hardware recipes of both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro aren't radically different from their predecessors. Both have the same 50MP main cameras and 12MP ultra-wides, with the Pixel 7 Pro bringing an extra 48MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom powers.

Overwatch 2 players are truly going through an immensely rough launch. Before a recent patch, many also couldn’t log into their accounts with their phones. And that’s not counting the litany of bugs and errors that have plagued players once they finally managed to log into the game. Players have even been getting a message saying that they can’t invite their friends to play because they’re in a “different version” of Overwatch 2.
Thankfully, players have discovered that’s not actually true: The UI message has been lying to you. Deep in its “known issues” forum post, Blizzard publish...]]>
