In 1952, Hambourg was appointed as the painter of the Navy, and in 1963, he started to go on many voyages. Being a part of the French Navy, he was able to visit Britain, Israel, the Soviet Union, and Venice. 

He also visited the United States of America in 1973,1978, and 1979, the Ivory Coast between 1971 to 1972, and Mexico in 1978. He also went to “round-the-world” missions through Jeanne d’Arc and Commandant Bourdais between 1983 and 1985. 

Hambourg also visited the city of Venice for the second time in 1989. Through all these travel, he brought back many preparatory drawings and sketches for subsequent paintings. He also used them for illustration in many collector’s editions of the books. 

In 1951, French President Vincent Auriol bestowed Hambourg the insignia of the “Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur, and in 1960, he became the Officer of the Legion d’Honneur. 

He was then appointed as the Commandeur des Arts et Lettres and also the Commander of the Legion d’Honneur in 1986. He was also appointed as the Grand Officier de I’Ordre National du Merite in 1996.
