Mighty Muffler

Mighty Muffler

As part of our on-going series of seasonal gift suggestions that involve fast knit and crochet projects, we decided we had to  give  the mighty muffler its due.  Never has a simple object served so valiantly.  Think about what the muffler (small scarf) can do:

Given a low outdoor temperature, it serves to keep the wearer warm.  Even if they weather is mild,  a small  muffler can send a big message when worn as an ascot, or an article of neckwear clothing.  Color, material and design can instantly send a message of quiet and confident elegance.

For the maker, it is a great opportunity to create a new design, practice with a new stitch and try out a new yarn without having to invest in multiple skeins – one or two usually is enough.

This week, we’re beginning with a super popular crochet Hook pattern that some might describe as a  cowl but it serves the same function as any muffler - It’s definitely a cooler weather option since it’s made in a medium weight yarn, with a size J crochet  hook

Pick a dramatic color yarn and add a few  sophisticated buttons and this can dress up a coat for the holiday season.  For everyday use,  you might choose a heathery grey or khaki colored yarn and consider some leather buttons!

While we are on the subject of crochet, may we remind you of another wonderful holiday gift for the person you know who loves the craft? Take a look Single Ended Crochet hooks and read about one of  the complete popular sized crochets  sets available.  Here are a few good examples.

Back to mufflers!  The truth of the matter is that any scarf pattern can easily be turned into a muffler by reducing  its size.  This can be accomplished by knitting it with a smaller number of stitches (less width) or just making it shorter. Think  of its size as about 9 to 12” wide and 36” long.  Here’s a free  beauty of a pattern  that can be shortened to qualify as a muffler.  The beautify of this one is that it works for either men or women.

Knit on a size 8 needle, using worsted weight wool, it qualifies as a cushy and quick knit and a wonderful gift for any one in your family or a dear friend.

Here is a free knitting pattern for a popular muffler that makes use of a keyhole to insure that the piece stays properly anchored.

This is called the Miss Marple Scarf (on Ravelry) but don’t think that means it’s just for smart and sassy older women. This is perfect for people of all ages!  All garter stitch means no purling and the keyhole opening insures it stays put while out and running around.

There’s no way we can think about keeping  ourselves or those we love warm and cozy without also considering the important pets in our lives.  Take a look at this fast and easy dog muffler

Here’s another fun option which can be made in Holiday colors and customized to fit your favorite household pet.
