A Sneak Peek at What's New in iOS 18.1 Beta

13 min read

There aren't all of Apple Intelligence's features ready yet, but here is a list of the ones that work in the test. Remember that developers are the only ones who can get iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 right now. In the fall, everyone will be able to get the program in a test form. There are still some bugs to fix in Apple Intelligence. Apple is fixing bugs and making the new features look their best before they go live. Late this year, the tools that aren't in the developer test will be added. Over time, Apple Intelligence will get better.

What's New in iOS 18.1 Beta: Writing Tools

Spelling and language mistakes, as well as problems with the words you use and the way you put them together, should all be checked in your work. You can tap to agree with all of the ideas, or you can read about each one separately. That way, you can change the tone and make what you've written better without changing the facts.

It's your choice between Friendly, Professional, and Short. You can pick out words and describe it. You can write a paragraph, make a table, or get the important points across. Short versions of things can be found in Mail, Messages, and other tools. You can look up any text on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac with Apple Intelligence. You can then use Writing Tools to recap it and do other things.

As soon as the main version of a new iOS version came out, Apple would try the x.1 version. We thought that the iOS 18 beta would be out all summer and then the iOS 18.1 beta would come out right away. After that, iOS 18.1 would come out in October, followed by beta testing for 18.2 and so on.

This year, things are very different. You can now start testing iOS 18.1 from Apple more than a month before iOS 18 comes out. Developers could get it on July 29. However, it can only be used on devices that work with Apple Intelligence, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and M-series iPads. It's not clear yet if or when the public test users will be able to get it.Our guide to iOS 18 tells you everything you need to know about the next iPhone.

Siri

The screen now glows around the edges when Siri is on. This works with CarPlay, iPhone, and iPad. You can put the Siri app anywhere on a Mac. Siri's glow changes when she hears what you say, so you don't have to stop what you're doing to tell her.

The Type to Siri window will show up if you double-tap the bottom of the screen. For this, you can type orders instead of speaking them back. If this doesn't work, you may need to restart. On a Mac, press the Command key twice to get to Type to Siri. When you type to Siri, it tells you what questions to ask so that you can get answers faster....

It's possible for Siri to use what you said before you asked it a question to give you a different answer. First, you ask, "What's the temperature in Orlando?" then, "What's the humidity?"

Siri will know that you mean Orlando.Siri can still understand you if you change your mind or lose your train of thought in the middle of a sentence.Siri can answer questions about the features and settings of your Apple product based on what Apple knows about it and how it works. If you don't know the name of a setting, she can still find it.

Send mail

If you press the "summarize" button, you can quickly read through any new emails. When you open an email, you'll now see a short description of it instead of the first few words.Mail puts messages that need to be read quickly at the top of your email when it makes sense to do so. This way, you can see what's important right away.

Smart Reply lets you quickly answer emails that have been sent to you by giving you options that make sense based on the email. You can see what's in an email without opening the app because the list of messages will show up on your lock screen.

"Smart Reply" in Messages reads the text message and gives you thoughts for what to say when you get a message.A list of all of your message alerts is shown on your lock screen.

Picture

You only need to say "My cat in 2024" or "Orlando in the summer" to make a Mind Movie. The Memory Mixes function or a mood can be used to change the way the music sounds. The feature will then pick songs and pictures that go with them.

You can also mark certain scenes and pictures that you want to see during the memory when you're making the trigger. If you want to find something in Photos, all you have to do is say it out loud, like "Eric rollerblading while wearing green."You can also search for parts of videos.

You can narrow down what you want to find with the help of search. In Notes and other apps, you can record music and get a translation and a summary of the text. You can record lessons and other sounds with this.

Modes of Focus

Only important alerts that need your attention are shown in the Reduce Interruptions Focus Mode. All other alerts have been hidden. When you change the Focus mode or make a new one, there is a new button that lets you turn on Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing.

It does the same thing as the Reduce Notifications Focus option: it turns off notifications that aren't important while letting important ones go off. You can change how messages are sent to certain apps and people, just like you could before iOS 18.1.You can record phone calls in iOS 18.1. You can press the small record button in the upper left corner of the screen to start recording when the call starts.

Everyone on the call is told that it is being recorded before it starts.Records of phone calls can be found in the Notes app. You can listen in to see a copy and have a report made from it.You can ask Apple Intelligence to read you a story while you read it in Reader Mode.

Report on Apple Intelligence

There is an Apple Intelligence Report in the Privacy and Security part of the Settings app that lets you export your Apple Intelligence info. Apple said that Apple Intelligence would be open and honest.

To get to and send your Apple Intelligence info, you will need to use Face ID. Registered workers with a compatible device are the only ones who can get the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas. The fix will not show up on devices that can't run Apple Intelligence.

Waitlist for Apple Intelligence

People who have updated to iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 for developers will need to go to the Settings app and add their name to the list of people who are waiting for AI. Behind the scenes, a waitlist keeps the system from getting too busy so that downloads can happen fast.

If you sign up for Apple Intelligence, your signups have been enabled quickly. This is because Apple products download the files they need to process while they are online. Because each waitlist is linked to a unique account, you only need to sign up for it once to be able to use it on other computers.

Apple Intelligence can only be used in English in the US right now. It can't be used by developers in China or the EU. The United States needs to be chosen as the device's language and area.

Limitations on use

It takes longer to roll out iOS 18.1 as well. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad, or Mac with M1 and the language setting is set to U.S., Apple said in a news release in June that you would be able to try out Apple Intelligence features in beta.

English. But both users and our tests show that you also need to set the country of your computer to the U.S. One important thing is that this doesn't change where the App Store is.You need to go to settings and tap on the new Apple Intelligence & Siri page after setting your area and language. After that, you can use the Apple Intelligence tools.

You will be told when your name is taken off the list of people wanting to use Apple Intelligence features. Remember that the AI suite models might take a while to download on your device, so not all of the features will be available right away.

Specifics

Apple has added new effects to Siri with this release. You can also use the text prompt with Siri if you double-tap the bottom bar.You can also use writing tools to make the work better or write it again in the same way. You can also make the tone "Friendly," "Professional," or "Concise" to your liking. Apple also lets you turn a bunch of writing into a table, a list, or a set of key points.

In the Mail app, you can recap emails. The most important emails will be at the top of your mailbox. You can also quickly see a list of emails without reading them. The smart returns tool lets you answer texts quickly as well. With iOS 18.1 there is now a Focus Mode called "Reduce Interruptions" that is smarter than before. In this mode, AI will only show you things that are important to you.

The Apple Intelligence suite still lacks many tools, such as ChatGPT interface and Image Playground. Bloomberg reports that Apple is still working to fix bugs in many of these new features, so people won't be able to use them just yet.

A lot of the new Apple Intelligence tools are coming out at different times. It was planned that some would come with iOS 18, others later this year, and still others in the spring of 2025.Apple has made some changes to its plans. When iOS 18.1 comes out, which should be in October, it will have the first set of Apple Intelligence tools. There is a list of things that will be added at certain times.

iOS 18.1: What You Need

Right now there is a line for the iOS 18.1 test. People will see this message when they get the iOS 18.1 developer version. The iOS 18.1 beta gives you a sneak peek at an update to iOS 18 that will come out later this fall. With this version, Apple Intelligence can now run the first set of tools.

To get on the list for the Apple Intelligence test, do these things. When it's ready for your device, you'll be told. Both the gadget language and Siri language must be set to US English. Also, the United States needs to be set as the device country.

As was already said, Apple Intelligence can only be used on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max in U.S. English in the United States. China and the EU are not allowed to have it.

Installing iOS 18.1: How to do it

The iOS 18.1 beta is only available to coders right now, but anyone can still get it. You don't have to pay $99 a year to be a developer to take the developer test after iOS 17. Having a free developer account is fine. You can get one in Xcode or the Apple Developer app for iOS. Here's how to do it with the Apple Developer app:

Get the Apple Developer App from the App Store.

Open the app.

Select "My Account."

Sign in with your normal Apple ID.

If they go to the Settings app, then General > Software Update, and then choose iOS Developer Beta in the Beta Updates tab, they can get the iOS 18.1 beta instead. There are words that say "Upgrade to iOS 18" near the bottom of the main Software Update screen when you go back to it. Just tap that if you want to see the iOS 18.1 test.
