Arlo’s Essential indoor cam is a good security camera, but it’s not particularly exciting. If you already own Arlo’s excellent video doorbell or outdoor cameras and want an indoor cam, the Essential Indoor Cam is ideal; keeping everything on the same app is probably worth $99. What about everyone else? It’s still difficult to beat the super-affordable alternatives.
There are a lot of features for the price.
The Essential Indoor camera captures video at 1080p and has a 130-degree field of view and a 12X digital zoom. It uses a single infrared LED for black-and-white night vision and will send push alerts and record video when it detects motion or sound. The camera comes with a three-month Arlo Smart trial plan that gives you access to 30 days of recorded video history, but after that you’ll have to pay for a subscription to view video and to access other features.
Arlo Essential Indoor Camera – 1080p Video with Privacy
The Arlo Essential Indoor Camera is 4.5 inches tall, 1.9 inches wide, and 2.0 inches deep, and is available in black or white. A thin mounting arm and a round base support the camera enclosure, which can be placed on a desktop surface or mounted on a wall or ceiling. The camera can be swiveled forward, backward, or sideways using the mounting arm.
The camera’s face is glossy black and houses the camera assembly, an ambient light sensor, a status LED, a microphone, and an app-activated privacy shield. Around the back, there’s a speaker and a micro USB power jack, as well as a Sync button under the front edge of the enclosure. Under the hood is a siren to keep intruders at bay and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio to connect to your home network. A 6.5-foot USB power cable, an AC adapter, mounting hardware, and a setup guide are included with the camera.
The Arlo Secure Plan includes 30 days of video history, intelligent motion alerts (person, package, animal, vehicle), activity zones, interactive notifications, and priority support for $2.99 per month for a single camera or $9.99 per month for an unlimited number of cameras. You will also have access to Arlo’s Call a Friend feature, which allows you to call someone in your contacts list with the press of a button. The Secure Plus plan, which costs $14.99 per month, covers all of your cameras and includes everything from the Secure plan, as well as access to a 24/7 emergency response center that will dispatch first responders to your camera location at the touch of a button.
Installing and Using the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera
In testing, installing the Essential camera was simple. I had the Arlo app from previous reviews, but if this is your first Arlo device, you’ll need to download it and set up an account. I launched the app, selected Essential from the Camera list, and then tapped Add New Device at the bottom of the Devices screen. I then chose the Essential Indoor Camera, went through a few screens with mounting instructions, and clicked Connect Without SmartHub (you can choose to add the camera to a hub if you have one installed).I confirmed my Wi-Fi SSID, entered my Wi-Fi password, and powered up the camera. Once the privacy shield opened up I tapped continue, pressed the Sync button, and tapped Continue again when the LED began flashing blue. The app quickly found the camera, prompted me to give it a name, and updated the firmware. Once the update was finished, the installation was complete.

In testing, the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera produced clear 1080p video. The color quality was excellent, with no visible pincushion or barrel distortion. The black-and-white night vision had good contrast and was sharp up to about 10 feet.
The motion detection features of the camera worked as expected. There were no false alarms, and the camera performed admirably in distinguishing alerts caused by people, vehicles, and pets. Sound detection also performed admirably. I used Alexa voice commands to watch video on an Amazon Echo show, and they always worked perfectly.
