The French yearn for better coverage for their vision problems

Vision disorders affect a large proportion of French people, regardless of age. However, the price of a pair of glasses is very high in France, especially when it comes to specific devices such as glasses with progressive lenses. The subscription to an optical mutual is then very interesting. It remains to know how to choose it.

Many people think that wearing glasses is only for teenagers and adults. And yet, 18% of children must wear a pair of glasses when they have just started kindergarten.

However, the costs inherent in these vision disorders are significant. On average, a frame with corrective lenses costs a few hundred euros. For specific requests (vision with axis, progressive lenses or others), the invoice can go from simple to double. It is therefore more than important to take out mutual optics as soon as possible, to benefit from better health coverage in this regard.

VISION DISORDERS AFFECT ALL AGE GROUPS

If seniors are those who suffer the most from vision problems (97% of those over 60), they are far from the only ones. Visual impairment affects 46% of French people aged 20 to 46. However, children also suffer from visual impairment. Statistics show that 18% of children entering kindergarten already need to wear glasses, as their sight is impaired.

CORRECTING VISION PROBLEMS IS EXPENSIVE IN FRANCE

In France, a pair of glasses costs several hundred euros . For example, frames and corrective lenses often exceed the 300 euro mark. When talking about specific glasses, the bill can quickly explode.

It is precisely for this reason that it is important to take out mutual insurance as soon as possible, in order to benefit from effective health coverage in this regard, when the need arises. What information should then be retained during an optical mutual comparison ?

THE DIFFERENT OFFERS ON THE MARKET

The optical mutual in France can be categorized into 5 specific levels :

  • Level 1 corresponds to policyholders who take out a guarantee for the sake of prevention;
  • Levels 2 and 3 allowing you to be reimbursed for a pair of glasses with simple corrective lenses (partial or full reimbursement);
  • Levels 4 and 5 are aimed at those with specific needs (progressive lenses, special lenses, etc.).

However, studies show that the French do not take out the optical mutuals they really need. Indeed, they tend to subscribe to those that correspond to their financial means.
