Extended reality and the future of learning

Extended reality and the future of learning

Extended Reality is an umbrella term that encompasses various immersive technologies that have the ability to merge the physical world we live in with computer-generated virtual worlds. This means that top UX design firms combine various components of computer-altered reality, including but not limited to augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), to develop XR.

X in augmented reality also referred to as XR, is a variable that can stand for any letter of the alphabet, as the components of XR are not clearly defined. It includes any technology that combines real and virtual environments, including future realities that we have yet to develop as in App development companies in UK.

To fully understand what Augmented Reality is and what it can do, you need to understand the three main components of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR). We explain them below:

What is XR?

In short, XR is "reality-plus" technology using any kind of display. XR is VR plus AR.

XR stands for "extended reality," an umbrella term that includes VR, AR, and MR. All XR technologies take the human-PC screen interface and modify it, either 1) by immersing in a virtual environment (VR), 2) by adding or augmenting the user's surroundings (AR), or 3) by both. you (MR).

The term XR has been around for decades. It first appeared in the 1960s when Charles Wyckoff filed a patent for his silver halide "XR" film, designed for photographing extremely bright light events such as nuclear explosions.

Recently, the term has become mainstream as device manufacturers try to describe the various display upgrades they are working on. A few examples are immersing players in the action by placing a screen (smartphone display or headset) directly in front of their eyes (VR) or adding game characters to a real environment, as in the popular Pokémon Go (AR).

VR is taking off in the gaming world. You can check out some of the ways in our guide to How VR for PC is Elevating Gaming. It's also making waves in the enterprise environment, which you can explore in our HP Tech@Work How Businesses Can Excel With VR article.

Augmented reality (AR)

Augmented reality, or AR, is where computer-generated content overlays the real world we live in, enhancing reality with digital content such as text, images, and animation. This experience can be accessed either through AR glasses or through smartphones, tablets, etc. A key feature of AR is that it is not fully immersive because the augmented content does not merge with physical reality, meaning that users can still be aware of what takes place around them and interacts with reality.

virtual reality (VR)

Virtual reality, or VR, is a technology that fully immerses users in a simulated digital environment. This requires a special VR headset or head-mount display so that the user can have a 360-degree view of the virtual world.

Mixed Reality (MR)

Mixed reality, or MR, has elements of both VR and AR. While digital content overlays the real world as in AR, this overlay is immersive and interactive as in VR. The digital and real worlds thus mix in real-time.

The future scope of augmented reality

A recent survey revealed that more than a whopping 60 percent of respondents believe that Extended Reality will become mainstream within just the next five years. This shows how quickly this technology is developing and how readily the public is ready to accept it once it is ready and available on the market.

Indeed, Extended Reality has many uses and could be used in all kinds of fields such as retail, real estate, marketing, training, entertainment, and more. It can also be used by the best UI UX design services. This technology has the potential to completely change the way we live our daily lives because it will change our very perception of reality.
