Minecraft Survival Mode Preview

6 min read

Here's a glimpse of Minecraft's Survival Mode that paid players will get to try out in just a week (September 1st). A lot has been added since we first posted about the game, like swimming cave pigs. Swimming cave pigs! They are also fond of flesh however only when it's in Hot Pockets.

You can learn more about the release here.

Jwill is a great musician! I'm eager to play. But, is this a game? This is a toy.

- Quetz Oh boy oh boy oh boy.

- citricsquid minecraft gets better everyday I had no idea it was becoming this awesome. It's stunning.

- sqrl YES

Behemoth Holy crap. This caused me to realize how small my place on the earth is. It proves that Notch is a GOD. He invented Minecraft and is expected to rest in what is the seventh day. Indonesia?

Wiivn It's better but I don’t like the idea that slower-destroyed bricks and construction limitations are merged... It's going to look like a standard mmo.

MasterShake - MasterShake How could it be a Survival Mode if it doesn't even have a health bar Wiivn?

Scott Wiivn is a bit sluggish.

I'm sure Scott not as retarded as your mother.

- http://0xdeadc0de.org Eclipse calm down kids...

It would be more beneficial to have an option to build and the survival mode. In this mode, you can only dig a few things and you must crawl through the dungeons made by others.

-- ngajoe Man...I was thrilled. When it mentioned "survival mode," I was thinking along the lines of Stranded 2. This was a great survival mode!

-- Nicholas Lee I don't know if it's me, but I still don’t "get" this game.

Eagle Guys, Notch is still in the sandbox mode. If you visit his website, you will see that he is in survival mode, zombie Siege mode, and many more. The sandbox mode will be kept. The game is in beta at the moment, and is only two months old. It's not yet a game but it's a toy. Notch is still working on the game's numerous modes. :P

- Malasdair I'm certain Minecraft will be awesome within the next year. Is he using a pay-now-to-help-me-develop format?

Citricsquid @malasdair is basically. Pre-ordering has given him an opportunity to switch to minecraft 60% of the time. The remaining 40% is for his IRL "outside his house" job. He'd get sloppy working on his own all the time and we're paying him to develop it more.

- Gutter @ Nicholas Lee: It's not an actual game however I don't believe it is. We're not crazy.

- FISH I would prefer the art to not be so pixelated and muddy.

It would be awesome to have a more modern design like a megaman legends.

Does the game be able to support custom texture sets? It would be fantastic. I would make one.

- Tim L. I hold patents on the words "Mine", "Craft", and "Scott's Mother" and you're all being sued.

Nobody I know has ever liked the super pixelated art style of Indie games. Unless it serves a real reason in the game the only thing it's doing is making the eyes tired.

Okay, you don't look like a mainstream title, I get this; however, you appear like every other poorly rendered indie game.

Sinoth I like the pixelized textures very delicious.

- ngajoe Concur w/sinoth. We are so happy for Pixels!

- Schwerpunk I did not really think about the graphical style. It just seems to work.

Notch has also said that he will release a DRM free version of the software. I would imagine that you can simply replace the texture files.

The game is a great illustration of how important it is for players to perform their tasks to Notch.

- Anon is introducing the Dungeons and Levers Expansion Pack

+ Dungeon Mode. Similar to Survival, but you can't damage walls or make objects. + Programmable Tiles. Pressure plates, levers, doors. + More mobs. + More useful items. (Potions? Teleporter stones? Keys?) + Official format for public levels + Play on player-generated levels or randomly generated levels. 100% for anyone who purchases the game!

- contra Looks great. Although I didn't have the time to spend making things in the sandbox that was in beta, it's still interesting to look at. I also hope that the music in this video is included in the game. It fits perfectly and I'm tired of the chiptunes.
MINECRAFT

-- Sparky Every time I see this game, it makes me believe that there are millions of truly amazing ideas that have yet to be explored.

(P.S. - I agree with Fish about the deliberately low resolution textures. But that's entirely subjective.

This build really looks much more polished than the last one I played. Keep up the excellent work!

FISH What I mean is that textures should be maintained at the same resolution, but cleaned up and used less colors.

low-res is excellent, but there's more to it than just having a low resolution. Every pixel counts. Every pixel counts. They don't even have weight right now.

- Sparky Yes, I understand what you're saying about the textures, and I'm with you. Sorry if I've expressed myself in a way that isn't precise enough. Megaman Legends is a good example of a game that utilizes low resolution, low color depth textures but isn't intentionally imprecise or sloppy appearance. It features a lot of clean solid color regions and nice hand-pixelled details.
