Pottery-Making is an ancient skill and tradition handed down from generations in the ethnic, medieval town of Bhaktapur. The village’s mainly Newar inhabitants are skilled craftsman, especially known for making exquisite pottery highlighting their dedication to the art. Their potteries along with beautiful carved wooden windows, latticework and hand woven fabrics, including the traditional local red and black saris are magnificent examples of Newari craftsmanship.

Sightseeing of Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Learn Pottery Making
In the morning, we first visit the medieval city of Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaon. It is situated about 17 kms east of Kathmandu and was one of the three kingdoms of the Malla Kings. Here we shall visit The Lion Gate, Picture Gallery, beautiful embellished Golden Gate and 17th century Palace of Fifty fife Windows. The city’s ancient temples and palaces are magnificent examples of Newari craftsmanship with their beautiful carved wooden windows and latticework, and Bhaktapur’s people are still renowned for their pottery and hand woven fabrics, including the traditional local red and black saris.
From Bhaktapur we continue to Thimi, which lies on a plateau 12 kms east of Kathmandu. The village’s mainly Newar inhabitants are skilled craftsmanship, especially known for making exquisite pottery.
We will meet Shiva Dai (brother) in Thimi, who has continued crafting countless beautiful work since he was a child. He learned the skills from his father and has made this his journey. He is sad to see that the youth in his community is not interested. He aspires to help continue the heritage of his community and wants to inspire the coming generation to learn and continue the traditions. You will get to spend time with this passionate man to learn about the craft and its history. You can then dedicate few hours to make your own cup or bowl of your choice and take it home with you. You can also hand-sculpt a turtle, elephant or birds.
