Developing Website Quality Through Website Evaluation

3 min read

As a website owner, how can you ensure that you have a high-quality website that is designed to attract visitors and get them to take the action(s) you want them to take Bloom 44?

Before you can develop a quality website, you need to understand what quality means. The term is widely used, but what does it actually mean and how do we define quality?

Webster's Collegiate dictionary defines quality as "of high quality" - very useful.

The Oxford Reference Dictionary defines quality as "degree or level of excellence."

To me, quality is something that is well designed and made and serves its purpose. If it looks good and is stylish, that's a bonus. But if something looks good, but isn't well designed or produced and isn't fit for its intended purpose, I would strongly argue that's not a measure of quality.

There's a lot more to good website design than just how a website looks, because that accounts for less than 5% of the elements that make up an effective website. This may surprise you if you are a website owner or web designer who puts a lot of emphasis on appearance.

There are two common sayings that apply just as much to websites, and they are:

"Don't judge a book by its cover".
"Appearances can be deceptive".
A well conceived and designed website is what's under the hood. Much of it you don't see, but both influence whether the website serves its purpose. But what is the purpose of a website?

Well, a business website is about attracting visitors and getting them to take a desired action.

In the world of manufacturing, terms like quality, quality control, and quality assurance are commonplace today, but on the World Wide Web, quality control and website quality assurance are far from commonplace.

In my experience, website quality control is as rare as RHS. The search for RHS has to do with rocking horses and s_ _ t, I'll leave it to you to fill in the blanks.

To ensure a quality website, you have to do in the web world what you do in the manufacturing world. That is, you perform quality checks that evaluate the product and its processes against predefined standards.

In manufacturing, the only way to know if a quality product is fit for purpose is to evaluate it. Similarly, you only know if a quality website is fit for its purpose if you evaluate the website.

"That means doing a website assessment, also known as a website audit.

Recently, I updated two checklists we use in website development: a website assessment checklist and a website checklist. By the time I finished, the number of aspects of a website to evaluate had grown to over 150, with another 120 to consider for the entire website.
