Lifting Hook: Types, Uses, and Design

Lifting Hook: Types, Uses, and Design
3 min read

Sling and rigging equipment can make the tough job of overhead lifting a lot easier. One component of this type of equipment is the lifting hook. There are various types available, so you can easily pick the right hook for the specifics of your project. It is helpful to understand the different lifting hooks and rigging hooks available.

Eye Hooks

An eye hook lets you permanently connect the hook to the sling through a chain or welded fitting. There are advantages to using this method. First, you will have greater movement to allow for flexible positioning. It will also be easier to attach the hook to your load when you use this type of hook.

Bear in mind, though, that the eye hook needs to be durable and reliable. You will have to stop using the device once the throat of the hook cracks or bends. Also, if this type of rigging equipment bends or stretches, it will not pass inspections. Furthermore, it will not be capable of lifting heavy objects.

Clevis Hooks

Another possibility to consider for your heavy overhead lifting is the clevis hook. The idea behind this hook uses a fastening mechanism. It’s designed as a U-shaped apparatus that features holds at the end of prongs and uses a clevis and pin to function. This hook accepts the clevis pin, which is much like a bolt. A difference is that it is not completely threaded and has a cross-hold for a split pin. Some clevis pins are not threaded at all.

Also, clevis hooks for heavy equipment rigging can come with a snapping lock. At the base of this device, you will find a hook with a bolt and clevis. Some versions may have a pin. You can use the clevis to attach the hook to a chain or bracket.

You can also use a mechanical connection to a chain sling with a clevis hook. If you damage the clevis hook, you can replace it without getting rid of the whole chain sling. And while the clevis hook can pivot from side to side, it is not as versatile in movement as an eye hook.

Swivel Hooks Rigging Equipment

The third type of hook is the swivel hook, which comes in two variations. First, there is the positioning swivel hook. It lets the user correctly line up the hook while connecting the load. However, it does not rotate while it is carrying a load. Furthermore, you should only use it when you have to put the prick point must receive the hook.

The other type of rigging hooks in this category are true swivel hooks with bearing. These hooks have a bearing inside, which lets the hook rotate while under the load. This keeps the rigging from twisting.
