Dundee pupils redesign city waterfront using Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school students have created their plans for the future of the city's waterfront, using the game Minecraft.

Primary students have spent a few months playing the well-known video game to design plans for the area, which is currently undergoing the PS1bn's renewal.

The project was managed by Dundee City Council and the University of Dundee.

The plans were judged on the look of the design, as well as the amount of support for education, tourism, and the creation of jobs.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp involving primary 6 and 7 pupils from across the city Students from nine secondary schools have been taking place in a similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

The students were working in groups using Playstation and XBox consoles. They were connected to whiteboards in the classrooms and utilized them to reimagine and build their visions of the city’s waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson, Dundee University's school for education, said that the game was a "huge phenomena" that engaged children.

He added: "We need to understand the digital environments that children are in and how they influence their learning.
Ayeeee

"Games and apps like these can be a great way to engage children in subjects such as design and the environment.

"The children we've been working with over the past few months have been incredibly enthusiastic and they have produced some really great work. Some of it may prove difficult for city planners but of course that's the great thing about Minecraft that they can make anything."

Mr Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from around the globe to participate in the Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles to discuss how Minecraft can be best used in formal and informal learning.
