Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios has banned NFT integrations on Wednesday since it believes that the speculative aspect of NFTs together with the their scarcity and risk of exclusion and frauds related to NFTs are in violation of the game's principles.

While the NFT community was highly dissatisfied with the move, crypto-skeptic gamers were overwhelmingly positive.

The company of Sweeney is the one behind the development of the highly successful battle royal game Fortnite that is seen as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn’t necessarily pro-crypto and NFTs, its CEO stated that the company isn’t trying to force any views on the subject upon its users.

Developers should be free to design their games, and you're free to decide whether or not to play them. I don't think that stores or operating system developers should dictate their opinions on others. We won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgements, but NFTs do not currently fall within their jurisdiction.

"A store can decide to avoid making such judgements and instead host something that's legal, or choose to draw a line at mainstream acceptable norms as we do, or accept only games that align with the owner's personal beliefs," he said.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project called NFT Worlds with a major problem to resolve, considering that it was built on one of Minecraft's open source servers.
