Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

3 min read

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely won't" follow Minecraft developers in banning non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios has banned NFT integrations on Wednesday because it believes that the speculative nature of NFTs as well as the scarcity and risks of exclusion and scams supposedly associated with NFTs being against the game's fundamentals.

While the NFT community was extremely opposed to the move, the crypto-skeptic gamers were overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

The company of Sweeney is the one behind the development of the wildly popular battle royal game Fortnite, which is also considered to be a Metaverse-based platform. Although Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO said the firm isn't looking to impose any opinions on the subject on its players:

Developers should be free to design their games and you should be able to choose whether or not you want to play them. I don't believe that retailers or operating system developers should force their opinions on other people. We won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgments, however NFTs do not currently fall under their remit.

"A store could choose to make no such judgments and host anything that's legal, or choose to draw the line at the norms that are accepted by the majority of people like we do, or allow only games that are in line with the personal beliefs of the owner," he said.

Mojang Studios' NFT ban has been a major blow to NFT Worlds, a project built on Minecraft's open source servers, with a major issue.

Following the Mojang announcement, the NFT Worlds team stated it is now "brainstorming solutions" on how to move forward. The team mentioned that it is trying to reach out to Minecraft to explore if a solution is possible. In the meantime, a switch to an "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been discussed as possible possibilities.
