Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, a new bunch of cyclists have been born. When the world closed down, and people had no gyms to go to and activities for entertainment, most of them resorted to cycling. Cycling has everything to offer, from a decent workout to fresh air. In today’s time, when most people complain about kids not spending enough time outdoors, cycling brings entertainment that gives you a reason to step out of the house and enjoy nature. What’s more, it is an activity that people of all ages can do! So, parents can enjoy this activity with their kids and make brilliant memories.

What To Do When You See A Fellow Cyclist?

Another advantage of cycling is that it makes you socially adept. When riding out to exercise, commute or practise, you are bound to encounter other cyclists. Here are some ways you can and must greet fellow cyclists and strengthen the brotherhood of the bicycle community.

Wave At Them

Whether you are a new cyclist or an experienced one, wave at them to make them feel welcome when you see someone on your route. A nod or a smile would also do well. If you encounter the same person again and recognise each other, you can even stop to make small talk. Just acknowledging another cyclist creates a feeling of community. Even if you do not ride the same cycles or enjoy the same trails, the fact that you both enjoy the simple activity on two wheels is enough to start a friendship.

Offer Help

As a cycling enthusiast, you might know a lot about different cycles and riding styles. Spread the knowledge to the new ones. Offer bike advice or pass compliments on the other cyclist’s bike. If the time calls for it, you can save a new cycle lover’s day by being an impromptu mechanic. Additionally, do not hesitate to offer help if you know how to fix a chain or change a punctured tire. You can even guide the newbie and teach them how to do it. However, pay heed to the other person’s responses and if they do not seem to need help, do not over-impose yourself.

Slow Down Your Roll

When commuting through busy roads or a trail that has many other cyclists, it is always good etiquette to slow down your pace a bit. Letting others pass and giving room to other trail users not only makes you look polite but makes you instantly likeable. Buzzing mindlessly through roads leaves a bad impression not just on you but on the entire cycling community. Therefore, follow the rules and maintain courtesy in public whether you are on your cycle or not. Conversely, when you are given space or allowed room to pass through, make sure to express gratitude verbally or with a nod or a smile. Also, always remember to get a bell for your bike and choose paths that do not have much traffic if you intend to go on a fast-paced ride.

Offer Route Suggestions

Whether a cyclist is new in the city or on a new route, they would love to know about the best roads and trails to experience. If you are a veteran and know any good trails, offer suggestions to the newbies. Let them know about any websites or apps that can help them have a more enriching experience or stay safe when venturing out on new trails.

Invite Them On a Ride

If you really want to extend your courtesy and good manners into friendship, invite a new cyclist for a ride together. Instead of giving suggestions, you can show them the good trails and routes. You can talk about riding etiquette, riding in groups and different types of bikes, such as an e-bike and their advantages.

Conclusion

Most of the people who are new to cycling would appreciate any help, advice, or suggestions that come their way. Remember to be patient with new cyclists if you are on the giving side. Make small talks like discussing new gears in the cycling market or e-bike prices to make them at ease. Chances are, you might gain a new riding buddy.
