Gomoku is not to be confused with the more complicated game of Go, which also uses black and white stones. Gomoku assigns the black stones to Player 1, leaving the white stones for Player 2. The player that is going to begin the game, that is, your opponent, gets black pieces, while you are assigned the white pieces. You have a choice to play with black. You may put in two additional stones, one from each color, then give your first three pieces of color choice to the black player.

As stated, Black always goes first, Gomoku is played by two players, instead of placing the markers in the center of squares, you put them in intersecting lines which form the squares on the board. Both players alternate chances of placing their colored stones on the intersecting lines in a 12x12 grid. The second player then selects one color to play, and Freestyle Gomoku continues. Gomoku is played by a single player taking turns placing white and black pieces onto a board in order to make a continuous 5-piece row in either direction.
