How Immersive Technology Changing Education and Learning Methods?

It's no secret that education has been changing rapidly in recent years. Perhaps the most significant change has been the way that technology has begun to play a larger role in the classroom.

From simple things like using laptops and tablets to more sophisticated tools like virtual reality, immersive technology is having a profound impact on education and learning methods. Here's a look at how immersive technology is changing education and how it may shape the future of learning.

One of the most exciting ways that immersive technology is being used in education is through the use of virtual reality. VR creates a completely immersive experience that can transport users to another world. This makes it an ideal tool for teaching things like an anatomy or historical events.

VR can also be used to create simulations of real-world scenarios, such as what it's like to be a doctor or a firefighter. The possibilities for VR in education are nearly endless and it's already being used in some innovative ways.

Another form of immersive technology that is beginning to be used in education is augmented reality. AR is similar to VR in that it can create simulations and digital experiences. However, unlike VR, AR doesn't require users to wear a headset or be transported to another location.

AR can be experienced through the use of smartphone apps or even simple cardboard viewers. AR is being used in a variety of ways in education, from language learning to science experiments.

While VR and AR are the most well-known forms of immersive technology, they are far from the only ones. Other forms of immersive technology that are being used in education include Mixed Reality (MR), which is a blend of VR and AR, and 360-degree video.

Such kind of learning concerns full-sensory immersion that directs to major three learning experiences that are mentioned below:

  • Focused attention
  • Hands-on learning
  • Continuous participation

Glancing at the recent wave of Immersive Learning in the area of education and training, one can feel the desire to exceed it from a wow phase into lifelong learning solutions that make it potential for students to experience their subjects in a completely new way.

In order to make Immersive Learning a beneficial reality in schools and institutions, there is a need to manage three key gaps existing in the VR ecosystem - content, technology, and awareness.

Let’s discuss them in detail below:

Content for Mass learning

Firstly, there is a requirement to create a comprehensive library of content for mass learning. The content, unlike 360-degree videos, has to be real, immersive, interactive, and engaging, only then it would be motivational and passionate for the students. Also, we should add analytics modules like machine learning or artificial learning to furnish qualitative and quantitative feedback and score once the student undergoes the course.

Cost-effective method

Secondly, technology has to be reasonable in order to make it reach the masses. There is a need to build a cost-effective and easy-to-use tool that is facilitative to learning. One cannot hope for students to have a heavy VR carry the bag on their shoulders to school. Further, there is a requirement to build an operational program with the institutions and deliver active support and maintenance.

Awareness of VR-based learning

Thirdly and more significantly, awareness about VR-based learning in schools is as important as building content and technology for it. In fact, it becomes a greater challenge as there is a misconception among educators that immersive tools will disrupt the learning that has been running for years.

However, that isn't the issue, as teachers will invariably be the face of the institutions and curriculum. Also, there is a demand to assert the values and the potential of immersive learning in changing the educational system for the improvement of the learners by piloting the project within the institutions at the initial stages.  Only then is the inducement for deploying such technologies on top of the existing teaching techniques.

In order to create immersively learning a practical reality, the mixture of content, technology, and awareness about it within society is necessary. Moreover, school authorities, educators, and researchers have to come jointly to detect the power of such great tools in harnessing students' minds and making them more suitable learners.

Conclusions

Suppose a student experiences a human heart in mid-air and identifies different parts of it or learns about Newtonian mechanics by evolving and observing a ball as it reacts to student-induced transformations in gravity, velocity, and elasticity.

This imagination is called the impact of immersive technology. Immersive learning inspires inquiry where students understand by doing, capture the method of solving problems, and obtain knowledge in a unique way. It also assists in motivating the introversive and teaches distracted-free learning within the classroom. Further, it modifies the conventional method of teaching into a virtual classroom that nurtures self-learning power within the students.
