Programming languages can be a challenge to learn, especially for kids who prefer to create them than play with them. Thankfully, ThoughtSTEM has found a way to make programming accessible and entertaining in one shot. Its forthcoming LearnToMod software teaches you to write JavaScript code by producing Minecraft mods that are suitable to your current level of skill. If you're just beginning to learn with Minecraft, you can make blocks of code that create simple but fun features, like a bow that shoots teleporters. Advanced students, meanwhile can write in raw JavaScript and produce content that you would never have thought was possible in Minecraft's cuboid universe, like a Tetris mini-game.

The system also has many motivators, in the event that the game itself isn't enough. There are more than 100 lessons, which include videos that show how to do the task and badges to complete certain tasks. Private servers let you share your work with your friends. You can even earn credits at the University of California in San Diego in the event that you're working towards an education in programming. While only 150 students are taking tests with LearnToMod right now, you can pre-order it at $30 prior to its wider October launch -which is a bit late for back-to-school but a good option if you're hoping to get your feet wet.
