'Minecraft Earth' Gets a Bit more Physical Thanks to new NFC-enabled Minis

2 min read

When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of Augmented Reality and location-based games. But it was a different game (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) in that it didn't require you to actually go outside to participate in its mining and building gameplay. Now, Mattel has added another play dimension to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go can't really boast of: NFC-enabled toys.

The Boost Mini figurines are priced at $5 each. They will feature various characters from the Minecraft franchise that include Steve, Alex, creepers ducks, cows, and creepers. Each figurine is cute on its own. If you put it in contact with an NFC-enabled device abilities will be available within Minecraft Earth for a specified period of. The duration will be displayed on an alarm clock. You'll also get XP for registration of the mini with the game as an additional incentive to collect them all (or borrow from friends).

The first batch that will be released this spring includes 20 minis with 10 different abilities to choose from. Mattel also has an accessory pouch that can be attached to your belt to carry your Minecraft Earth game with you on the go.

If you're not interested in the new game but want to experience the sweet Minecraft toy action, Mattel has also revealed a range of new $3.50 blind box minis themed to the classic Minecraft as well as larger 3.5-inch figures that tie into the forthcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity which measures over six inches tall, is enjoyable as it's designed to match the toys. The 3.5-inch figurines will be $10, with the monstrosity going for $25 when it's released in the fall.
