Ahead of a new school year that could have students not stepping into a classroom, Microsoft is bringing Minecraft: Education Edition to Chromebooks.

The Chrome OS version of Minecraft: Education Edition will allow cross-platform play between Windows, iPad and Mac versions of the game, so students will have the chance to collaborate and socialize on projects regardless of the device they're playing on. Microsoft is also updating the program to include 11 new STEM lessons and a Minecraft world to teach students about pollination and bees. A new library of lesson plans and learned abilities that are tagged are part of the update too.

The company claims that Chrome OS, iPad and Windows devices will download the update automatically. Mac users will have to manually download the update. Schools that have already used Minecraft: Education Edition in their classrooms don't need to worry about changing their subscription. The company will add the Chrome OS version to its Microsoft 365 for Education A3 and A5 licenses.

Minecraft: Education Edition is available since. It's not surprising that it's only being made available to Chromebooks this year. In reality, Google's computing platform dominates the education market. According to the company there were more than 30 million Chromebooks that were in use at schools across the world in the year 2019. In 2018, Chromebooks represented 60 percent of all laptops and tablets that were purchased for classrooms of K-12 in the US. The other thing that's fascinating about this update is that it gives Chrome OS users an official method to install Minecraft without having to sideload the game onto their device.
