Minecraft on Xbox one this Week, PS4 "soon" or maybe Sooner" [Update]

2 min read

Not satisfied with mere bajillions, Minecraft starts racking up more sales this week as it is released as a downloadable on Xbox One - and perhaps PS4 too. Mojang's sandbox video game is scheduled to be available on September 5, 2015. 360 owners can upgrade to the Xbox One for $5/PS4. servers Microsoft notes that this upgrade applies regardless of whether you own discs or a download copy. If not, the full price version costs $20/PS16.

Although the PS4 release date is not set however, Mojang's Daniel Kaplan tweeted saying that "Sony gamers can look forward to a Minecraft surprise soon...or perhaps earlier?" The teaser came in response to a PlayStation France tweet that claimed the PS4 version of Minecraft will be released today, though as yet no other Sony channels have confirmed this. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know a release date for the PS4 version.

Update: The PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft has launched in the EU. It's unclear when the game will become available in North America or other regions. [Image: 4J Studios]

It's unlikely that the Vita version will be available this week. 4J Studios, the porting team, stated last week that it had "more work" to do before it could submit Vita builds to Sony for certification.

The latest Minecraft versions feature Minecraft worlds that are up to 36 times larger in size than the last-generation version. They also have longer draw distances. PS3 and Xbox 360 owners have the option to import their worlds into the Xbox One and PS4 versions and vice versa.

This news coincides with the fact that Mojang released Minecraft1.8 on PC. It's the update that has been in development for the longest at the Swedish studio, lasting 300 days. It's not a surprise that it's large, with a host of new changes which you can read about here. Highlights include the addition of Guardian and Endermite mobs balanced by the introduction of d'awww rabbits. There are also killer rabbits that aren't as d'awww, however, they are still quite d'awww. [Image: Mojang]
