Mojang has put its blocky feet down when it comes to brands and Minecraft. In an open letter to the community on its site, Owen Hill, the company's director of creative communications has laid out new guidelines that are specifically targeted at ad agencies, companies and any other non-gamer entities that want to profit from Minecraft's huge user base.

To give you an idea of the size this base is, Markus "Notch", Persson who was the creator of the PC version disclosed in 2014 that it had more than 100 million registered users. It's understandable that such a user base large would prove a tempting attraction for brands looking to promote their totally unrelated wares to the community. The new guidelines for building promotion stipulate that it's no longer allowed to create maps or servers to promote products that are not related in a playable form. You can stop wasting time on embarrassing promotions like the gigantic, working cellphone CaptainSparklez created on behalf of Verizon, or Disney creating a map of Tomorrowland to promote its film of the same name. But if you're a mega fan and you do these kinds of things on your own time and dime then that's acceptable to Mojang.
