Etta James was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 25, 1938. During her childhood, she sang in a church choir. In 1950, she went to San Francisco with her biological mother. Then, she moved in with her grandparents and attended Baptist church.

At age 15, she had her first hit single. It was a saucy R&B number about sex. Later, the song became one of James' signature songs, "At Last!" She also recorded several hits for the Chess label, including "Good Rockin' Daddy," and "Blue Gardenia."

Etta James signed with the Warner Brothers label in 1978. Then, she entered a rehab program. But her addiction to drugs and alcohol sapped her musical talents.

Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was a blues singer and psychedelic rock singer in the 1960s. She was the first woman to become a superstar in the male-dominated music industry.

Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1943. Her parents were not wealthy, but her father's work in the oil industry helped her get through her childhood.
