Crochet Bag Patterns for Beginners
5 min read

Crocheting a bag can be a fun and rewarding project for beginners. All you need is any of your crochet hooks and yarn. A crochet pattern can assist you with wonderful designs but then you can also proceed without them for beginner projects. As long as you are comfortable with basic crochet stitches and basic crochet techniques, you can easily plan a bag pattern. Or, if you are aware of the basics and know how to read a crochet pattern, you can work with instructions.

To get started you can work with any of your regular single-ended crochet hooks. If you have an interchangeable Tunisian crochet hook, you can easily work with them. If you have Tunisian crochet skills, you can produce a knit-like stitch effect that works beautifully for your bag project. For yarn, you can get your favorite colours of yarn skein from LYS or browse through stash leftover from previous projects. Along with hook and yarn, gather accessories for a smooth crocheting experience.

Here are a few simple crochet bag patterns that are perfect for those just starting out:

  1. Crochet Tote Bag

A tote bag is a very interesting project where you can try out multiple new stitches and techniques. You can work out the pattern but crocheting two rectangles and seaming them up with a wool needle. For the look of the project, you can work on the stitch pattern of your choice. Even the basic single crochet stitch works wonderfully for a dense fabric. You can also work with the reverse single crochet (RSC) stitch for a beautiful pattern that also creates a densely-packed stitch. The taller stitches creates an open weave effect. You can also choose the basic Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) for a textured knit-like fabric.

Materials: Worsted weight yarn (any color skein or two in different colors), crochet hook (size H/5.00mm), wool needle, etc.

Pattern:

Make a chain of 30 or more. The length of the chain will be the length of your bag.

Now work row 1- 30 or more, double the height of want your bag to be.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fold the rectangle in half and sew the sides together using the wool needle.

Attach a long chain to zip up the bag and yarn handles to the top edges.

  1. Granny Square Bag

Granny squares are beautiful and also beginner-friendly. You simply can make colorful squares or one in a single or a few colors. The charming beauty of granny squares has made its place in top fashion labels as well as fashion shows. You can work on small granny squares and assemble the bag or work on two big squares for either side of the bag. The design can be customized for a market bag, a sling bag or any other purpose.

Materials: Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors (you can also work with your stash), crochet hook (size G/4.00mm), darning needle.

Pattern:

Make a large granny square by following a basic granny square pattern. Start with a magic circle and work multiple rounds until you achieve the desired size.

Repeat the granny square pattern for the second square.

Sew the two squares together on three sides, leaving one side open for the bag opening.

Attach a long chain or yarn handles to the top edges of the bag. For a unique handle design you can assemble small granny squares in a length.

  1. Simple Drawstring Bag

You can work a drawstring bag of any dimension, from a small coin purse to a very big bag. You can crochet in the round for a seamless pattern or choose to seam the edges. For a truly seamless design, work the base with a magic circle.

Materials: Worsted weight yarn, crochet hook (size H/5.00mm), yarn needle, cord or ribbon. You can also knit or crochet an I-cord for the drawstring.

Pattern:

Chain 40 or more depending on the length or circumference of the bag.

Crochet rounds or a length of fabric that you would require for the height of the bag.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Thread a cord or ribbon through the top stitches to create a drawstring closure.

  1. Backpack

To crochet a backpack, you can work any design but would require handles to carry the bag on your back. The granny square or a seamless bucket or even rectangles folded and seamed together works beautifully.

  1. Amigurumi designs

Amigurumi is challenging but it follows the basic crochet stitches or techniques. You need a pattern for creating a cute creature such as owl or teddy.

Remember to adjust the pattern and yarn size according to your preference, and feel free to add embellishments or variations to make the bag unique. Enjoy your crocheting journey!
