Product Photography Tips That Work

Today’s customer is clever and has plenty of choices a few clicks away. Therefore, they are super choosy when it comes to buying e-commerce products.

You can brag about your product’s value and benefits in bland and dead words, but they hardly impact modern consumers.

Pictures, however, have a greater chance of making up a prospect’s mind to hit that buy button. Yes, we are talking about product photography.

Before you start work on your product’s photography, read these tried and tested tips to achieve success.

1- Set Up A Backdrop

Background plays a crucial role in any kind of photography but especially in product photography. You need to make viewers’ eyes automatically concentrate on your product and not its background.

You will thank us later when you start the post-production process, as professional photo background streamlines the editing process. A light or white background will help you delete unneeded objects and retouch images.

We have two affordable options for you to create an incredible background for your product photography.

A- Shooting Table

If you run a big e-commerce store and will shoot many photography sessions, you should purchase a white sweep. But if you are tight on budget, you can use white craft paper to create a chair-set-up backdrop for yourself.

Set up a chair with the wall and paste the craft paper on it so that it hangs to the ground, above the chair.

Now you can set up your product on the chair behind which lies an amazing background transitioning between the horizontal and vertical planes.

Or you can mount the paper backdrop above the chair and let the sweep hang down the chair, creating a similar smooth effect.

B- Light Tent

We recommend creating a lightbox or light tent to save some more pennies. It is a wireframe box with semi-transparent sides, helping develop an equally divided light around the product in focus.

How could you make it?

Position a storage container on its side and take off the lid. You can even tape all the sides and the bottom with the white paper if you want more equally distributed light.

Now, put a bulb or any other light on the sides of the storage container or use sunlight from a window if it's daytime.

2- Context is Important

You should put the item you are selling in its context. Suppose you sell leather jackets. Just a plain leather jacket against a blank background will not help the customer see the product improving their life in some way.

But, if you show a model wearing that jacket against a snowy backdrop, while hiking or biking, the customer will see the jacket in its context.

3- Use A Tripod

Ask any professional Product Photography services about the significance of using a tripod in photography and they will all have the same answer. It's profound.

Whether you are capturing photos of your products or have hired a professional to do so, using a tripod is a must to get quality pictures.

Have you ever seen crisp-looking images? Ever wondered how they're taken? These pictures were taken with a high depth of field. Depth of field is the distance between two subjects when everything in between them looks sharp and everything else seems blurred.

How do you achieve it? You want to click photos with a low aperture and slow shutter speed. When your camera is on low shutter speed, your hands most likely shake, leading to a blurry image.

A tripod can hold your camera still enough to get that sharp image you want.

4- Learn Photo Editing

Editing is a must for product photography in Dubai. Though we should try to keep it at a minimum, you should still have some know-how of photo editing.

Photo editing might include altering the saturation or brightness of images or concealing tiny flaws. This minor edit can make a world of difference to your final product photographs.

Photo editing software like Photoshop is loaded with mind-boggling features, making a newbie feel confused. To avoid feeling intimidated, you should learn the basics from photo editing experts.

But if you don't want to get enrolled in a paid editing course, go to youtube and benefit from hundreds of tutorials available on almost all photo editing software.

5- Choose An Apt Camera

If you are using a DSLR camera, here are our recommended settings for killer product photos:

  • Alter your white balance to match the color temperature of your photography site’s lights
  • Choose the aperture setting by the type of image you want to capture. If you want a few areas on your product to stay out of focus, choose wider aperture settings. And if you need a focused and crisp product photograph, choose a smaller aperture setting for a higher depth of field.
  • Before you start clicking pictures, adjust your camera for artificial or natural light. Then, turn off your camera’s flash
  • Select the highest-quality picture setting in your camera. If possible, pick Raw, otherwise, the broadest JPG setting
  • Opt for Large size in settings as it offers the biggest file size for the optimum photo quality
  • Opt for Superfine, as it utilizes all the pixels available in your camera, providing you with the best-quality picture

Bottom Line

Photography and film production in Dubai has never been easier before. Everyone has a DSLR camera and an iPhone. For this reason, we see every other person boasting that photography is their hobby.

You don't need to buy all the expensive equipment at once. First, identify your needs and also consider taking professional services. A trusted media production company has a team of top-tier photographers who can help you stand out from the crowd.
