Human energy consumption is expected to rise by 28% by 2040 compared to 2015, with fossil fuels accounting for the majority of the increase. While continued solar technology research is projected to bring some relief, it is not thought to be capable of providing a long-term energy source.

The notion of super absorption, which is the pillar that makes quantum batteries a reality, has been successfully proved by researchers at the University of Adelaide and its international collaborators to deliver superior energy. Quantum batteries can have a substantial impact on energy capture and storage in renewable energy and microelectronic devices during the development phase.

"The larger the quantum batteries that use quantum mechanics principles to enhance their capabilities, the less time it takes to recharge," said Dr. James Q. Quach, a Ramsay researcher at the University of Adelaide's School of Physical Sciences and the (IPAS) Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing.

"Theoretically, the charging power of quantum batteries may rise faster than the battery's size, resulting in novel charging methods," he added. "To show super absorption, the researchers created a series of wafer-like microcavities of various diameters, each holding a varied amount of organic molecules and each charged with a laser.

"Organic semiconductors that store energy is found in the active layer of the microcavity. Quantum cells' super absorption effect is based on the assumption that all molecules collaborate through a feature known as quantum superposition "Dr. Quach expressed his thoughts. "The charging time lowers as the size of the microcavity and the number of molecules grow." "The concept created by Dr. Quach and his colleagues opens up the prospect of a novel small and powerful energy storage technology," stated Professor Peter Veitch, dean of the University of Adelaide's School of Physical Sciences.

The research team's next step is to create a fully working quantum battery prototype after building the groundwork.
