Bahamas Historical Museum

The Bahamas Historical Museum (Non-Profit Museum) is an institution. The museum serves as a tourist attraction and preserves Bahamian culture and materials. The exhibits cover 500 years of history and include art, memorabilia as well as documents, photos, and artifacts.

Lady Arthur, the wife of Governor Sir Raynor Arthur, founded both the museum and the Bahamas Historical Society in 1959. Before the creation of the historical society, the Bahamas only taught British history. The Bahamas Historical Museum and Historical Society have helped to strengthen the island's history before European colonization.

The Bahamas Historical Museum is available from 10 AM to 4 pm Monday through Friday. The museum is closed on weekends and during July and August.

The Nassau Public Library and Museum are open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 5:45 pm, and Saturdays, 10 AM to 3 PM. It is closed Sunday.

Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation

Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation was named in honor of Pompey, an enslaved man who lived at Rolle Plantation. Pompey led a revolt at the Rolle Plantation, Exuma in 1830 when John Rolle, the plantation owner, ordered Pompey and 76 other slaves to move to another island.

This small museum features photos and artifacts which depict the Bahamian slave market and the daily life of enslaved Bahamians. The museum also features Wade in The Water: Peter Mowell and the Last Slave Ship to The Bahamas. This exhibit focuses on the history of a slave ship, which was lost in the Abacos in 1860. The museum also discusses 1834 emancipation.

Pirates of Nassau Museum

The Pirates of Nassau Museum, an interactive museum that allows guests to immerse themselves in the lives of Nassau's pirates, is called the Pirates of Nassau Museum. You can take a trip through time on the Revenge pirate boat.

The Golden Age of Piracy was 1690-1720. Nassau is known as the pirate capital of world. Pirates were able to help their boats through waters too shallow for larger warships in The Bahamas from Nassau, making it the center of pirate activity. Educulture Junkanoo Museum

Educulture Junkanoo is an exhibition that celebrates Junkanoo. It's a carnival-like experience in the Bahamas. It was originally a celebration of the freedom of slaves, who were granted days off during Christmas. The parade evolved into a grand spectacle with floats, live music and a multitude of spectators.

Arlene Nash Ferguson founded the museum. The museum is housed in an old home, with each room displaying a different type of history or culture. You will find traditional music, costume pieces, and fabrics among the exhibits. Visitors can also make traditional masks and dance in the interactive area.

Educulture Junkanoo will be open Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
