The Role Of AI Technology In BioMedical Engineering - A Guide For 2022
5 min read

AI (artificial intelligence) is being used more and more in the field of medicines. This is because the purpose of machines was to reduce human effort. Now, it has increased the use of AI to let robots and computer programs do all the simpler and repetitive human work by themselves.

Hospitals have now become more welcoming to the concept of using bots to do routine work and move objects from one room to another, especially in the face of the Covid pandemic.

Since the infection was spreading pretty quickly from one person to another through airborne transmission, robots with AI had to be deployed in hospitals to do simpler human tasks and reduce the exposure of the virus to doctors and nurses.

Therefore, to better understand the role of AI better in the field of biomedical engineering, we have decided to look into a few tasks that Ain and robotics do in this field. If you are interested in this and want to learn more about it, simply continue reading down below.

How Is AI Technology Used In Biomedical Engineering?

AI technology is used in biomedical engineering in many different ways. The most commonly known and integrated ones are:

1. Biomedical Imaging

The use of AI in biomedical imaging has been a great boon to doctors and researchers. Many times, the need for internal imaging arises because of the entry of foreign objects into the human body.

The need for such mostly arises when patients who were involved in accidents often have foreign objects lodged inside their bodies. When this happens, it becomes difficult for the doctor to exactly pinpoint and locate the object directly.

This is where AI-enabled imaging and scanning tools become the call of the hour. To ensure that the perfection and accuracy of surgeries can be done by the doctors and surgeons, AI-enabled tools help identify the foreign objects in the scanner.

Some AI-enabled tools that you must have seen doctors use in hospitals include MRI scanning machines that use hill-climbing algorithms sometimes.

2. Epidemiological Data Inference

When the Coronavirus spread globally like a wildfire in 2020, new inventions in the field of AI and medicine were highly requested by doctors and medical professionals worldwide.

The first AI-based invention that came to be in this field was Epidemiological Data Inference. Here, machine learning AI programs were developed to study patterns of the Covid outbreak.

For example, an AI bot was developed to find out certain patterns on how the infection spread from one place to another. This way, the origin point of the outbreak in the community could be traced back and mapped. This allowed for timely isolation measurements to be implemented.

This data helped trace which parts of a city or town need to be marked as red zones and other free parts that can be marked as green zones.

3. Health Care Robotics

Robotics has come a long way from being just tin cans trying to impersonate human actions. Now, with advanced technology developed every day by researchers and scientists, the time for the next step in robotics evolution using AI has arrived.

Such robots were used extensively in hospitals where Covid patients were treated. To lower the risk of infections from a patient to a doctor, robots with Conversational Artificial Intelligence were told to do the bidding.

Since robots are immune to biological diseases, they did the service work of maids, matrons, and nurses. For example, robots were used extensively in big hospitals in Europe to transport linen and medicines from one Covid infected person's chamber to another.

Robots powered by AI were also used in hospitals to disinfect rooms of Covid infected patients. Since a human entering the room and doing so wearing a PP kit would be dangerous, a robot doing so was by far the most interesting idea in a hospital.

4. Sequence Analysis

Analyzing genetic sequences in the DNA of a person is something that has only been possible with the use of AI tools in biomedical engineering.

Matching genetic sequences in DNA strands and splicing them is only possible when the AI has been fed enough information to identify and differentiate the different strands of DNA. This has an educational level with highest ROI.

However, since gene splicing is a very difficult task to do with human eyes and hands, robotics and nanobots get deployed.

Conclusion

The use of robotics and AI in the field of biomedical engineering have come a long way since developments first began. With new and new programs and robots being created for various medical purposes, we will soon be seeing hospitals filled with robots in charge of many human tasks.

Some of these tasks can include transportation of supplies from one room to another. Also, AI is used significantly in gene splicing and DNA identification and detection. These improvements have made the lives of doctors and surgeons easier.
