Some Key Aspects To Take Into Account When You Have Braces On
3 min read

Life with braces isn’t exactly the same as life with braces.  Not at least in the beginning. But of course, overtime you adjust and so does your oral cavity- the teeth and the gums. But having said that, it is important for one to establish the fact that braces can bring about a lot of changes in habits. It is in this context that we are dedicating this article to have a better understanding of what it means to actually have braces and how things might change.

Firstly, when you have just installed the braces, you may be quite uncomfortable with the whole apparatus in your mouth. It is only logical or normal. This is because braces are quite a bulky apparatus. There are metal chunks and metal wires. Even the ceramic ones are quite heavy. The problem is that your mouth is not accustomed to have such an alien apparatus in your mouth. And as a result of this you are most likely to experience soreness, numbness, gum bleeding, sensitivity and inflammation of the gums. While this is normal, these conditions can last up to as long as a week or two. This period is known as the adjustment period. During this adjustment period, as the name suggests, your system is getting used to the apparatus. You may also experience some pain during this period.

To deal with the adjustment period conditions such as sensitivity and pain, you can use dental wax. Dental wax is like a lubricant which is applied on to the gums, such that it forms a layer between the metal apparatus or the coarse part of the braces and the sensitive gums. This reduces the friction between the two and as a result of that the outcome is pretty decent. You will realise that it is quite effective in alleviating the issue caused by the abrasion. Dental wax is actually quite safe because there will be some concern regarding the accidental ingestion when applied inside the mouth. If the pain persists, you can add a couple of other hacks to get more relief from the pain, such as using warm salt water solution.

When you have braces on, you have to be very careful when you are brushing the teeth. You cannot go haywire or “brush-blazing” inside the mouth. You have to be very careful. You have to ensure that you do not snap a wire or two. The problem with braces is that you cannot fix or handle it on your own. If the setup is damaged, you will have to make an appointment with your orthodontist without fail, and at the earliest. For orthodontics in Carolina Forest consider Dr Jen Ortho.
