Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that comes with it) has a major new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and it's worth a second try.

As we mentioned in the release Candidate stage one of the most important features for users in this release is vastly easier modding with both small mod packs and entire games. Minetest offered a way to browse and download them all directly into the game for several months however, it now will also actually download all the dependencies mods require, making it much simpler to download the mod you want and then put it into the game. No more downloading one mod, and then searching for all the individual bits it needs.

The built-in game "Minetest Game" also received a few enhancements. While quite bare-bones by itself however, it is an excellent base to showcase the engine and for extending by adding modifications. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now has crafting guides, 5 additional wood types and sound effects for lava and active furnaces, new translations , and numerous bugs fixed. It is continuing to grow slowly and slowly into something that is a bit bigger from the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing when you point at objects, freely bindable mouse buttons, name tags for players now have a semi-transparent background, there's a caves option for the flat map generation The "place" and "fig" keys are now configurable and modding enhancements are plentiful and numerous bugs fixes, such as the player not being able to accessing inventories of others.

It's wonderful to see this open-source engine and game making a splash. According to the official server list, Minetest is used by many players with hundreds online at the time this article goes live.
