Artificial intelligence is the way of life today. Also known as Ai, you hear of this term close to everywhere today be it in cars, software, applications, websites, robotics, and the latest - healthcare. To begin to understand why Ai is important, let us understand what is Ai, or Artificial Intelligence.

Introduction:

Simply put, Artificial Intelligence or Ai is the ability to bring human-like thinking abilities a.k.a. intelligence to a machine or software, robot and yes, you guessed it right, health care too. The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare has been growing rapidly in recent years. According to a report by MarketsandMarkets, the healthcare AI market is expected to grow from $2.1 billion in 2018 to $36.1 billion by 2025, at a compound annual growth rate of 44.9%

The use of artificial intelligence for healthcare and its importance has grown by leaps and bounds over recent years. Today you have robots doing minimally invasive surgeries, accurate to the T. These robots are powered by Machine Learning or ML, which is a branch of Ai too. Over the last several years, healthcare organizations, test centers, hospitals, and more have accumulated tons of data. Ai can and is being used to analyze this information to bring forward valuable insights and information leading to new discoveries and advancements in healthcare.

Why Use Ai in Healthcare?

Take for example the recent pandemic of Covid19. Millions of people died and many lived. Those who lived took one of the several vaccines brought out by leaders in health care. Have you ever thought about how these healthcare companies were able to launch protective immunizations in such a short time? Yes! You guessed it right. It usually needs a long time to develop a drug or vaccine using traditional methods but to try to accelerate this process, several studies have applied AI techniques to identify potential drugs and develop effective and safe vaccines for COVID-19.

Case Studies

AI was successfully employed by Pfizer to run vaccine trials and expedite distribution. In fact, all the developers of vaccines used AI throughout the vaccine development process to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine met the needs of individuals. Millions of pages of data were analyzed by Artificial Intelligence in real-time and the effects, repercussions, and side effects of the prospective vaccine were studied by Ai, before launching the Covid Vaccine in the open market. It is thanks to Ai that a vaccine was able to launch in 2 years as compared to the normal time frame of 5-7 years.

Benefits of Ai in Healthcare:

In addition to data analysis and robot-based surgeries, other benefits of using Ai in Healthcare include:

  1. Easier, faster, and more accurate diagnosis.
  2. Record keeping and analysis of billions of bytes of healthcare data
  3. Faster vaccine discoveries, not only for covid but also possibly for other life-threatening diseases that at present have no cure.
  4. Healthcare deliverability and accurate diagnosis through digital mediums especially to areas where healthcare may not be accessible easily.
  5. Pinhole surgical procedures with daycare hospitalizations, which in the traditional format would be severely invasive requiring days of hospitalization.

Conclusion:

The potential of Ai in healthcare is huge and non-debatable. Thanks to Ai, remote villages in several countries now have access to healthcare that would otherwise not be available, Ai is also powering digital healthcare now and in today's world, it is extremely easy to login to certified apps, punch in symptoms, get an accurate diagnosis, prescription AND medicines at your doorstep. That being said, the future of Ai, or Artificial Intelligence in healthcare, has infinite potential, unlimited possibilities, and never-ending opportunities.
