Fans of Capcom, SNK, and the Versus series were shocked to see the reveal of SVC Chaos at Evo 2024. Not only was this 21-year-old game making a sudden return, but it was also immediately available for purchase.
SVC Chaos is currently available digitally on Steam, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. For collectors, a limited edition physical version is on the way in the US and the UK, featuring retro-style goodies. The UK-based physical edition is being handled by a company offering a standard physical release, a collector's edition, and a deluxe edition. All versions are limited in quantity and come with various extras, including artbooks, soundtracks, and exclusive art pieces.
The game features 36 characters from both Capcom and SNK, including well-known fighters like Ryu, Ken, Terry, and Mai, as well as deep cuts like Mars People from Metal Slug and Tessa from Red Earth. The new version unlocks secret bosses from the arcade version, Athena and Red Arremer, for use at the start of the game.
SVC Chaos first launched in July 2003 as an SNK-backed project in the Capcom Vs. SNK partnership. Capcom had previously released two crossover games, Capcom Vs. SNK and Capcom Vs. SNK 2, before the partnership dissolved.
The return of SVC Chaos adds multiple enhancements, including hitbox indicators for precise training sessions, a gallery of artwork, and a suite of multiplayer options with rollback netcode. Online lobbies can hold nine players at a time, and a tournament mode with multiple bracket formats is available.
While SVC Chaos has its flaws, such as an unbalanced roster and limited online features, it remains a cult-classic crossover fighter. The game's gorgeous sprite work and unique character choices make it a nostalgic curiosity for fans of the genre.
SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos is out now on Steam, with PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions set to launch soon. For more on Evo 2024, check out the official website to watch all of the action across seven different Twitch streams.
