Entertainment is a very important part of our lives. It helps us unwind, have fun, and enjoy life. People watch television, listen to music, and even play sports as a hobby. Ultimately, entertainment is a very personal pursuit. However, the content of media is influenced by factors including personality, education, and demographics. In addition, the content of these media can change over time. Therefore, it is not enough to say that one prefers a specific genre. Instead, it is crucial to know what motivates one to engage in certain activities.

Recent research has provided a strong foundation for hypotheses about the structure of entertainment preferences. This research was conducted using data from an online survey of more than 3,000 individuals. The study examined the correlations between five factors underlying entertainment preferences and five personality traits. By correlating entertainment preference scores with five of Saucier's Big Five Mini-markers (intelligence, creativity, emotional stability, empathy, and leadership), the authors discovered a clear factor structure. They found that gender was the strongest predictor of entertainment factors, followed by age, ethnicity, and educational level.

Aside from these predictors, there are a number of other psychological dispositions that influence one's expectations from media. For example, it has been shown that people can be induced to experience a wide range of emotions through the use of media. Additionally, people seek out specific content for a sense of identity.

One popular example of this is the television game show, The Price Is Right. The game show's first incarnation aired in 1957. It continued into the new century with Bob Barker as host. During the 1960s, variety shows like Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In also achieved great success. These shows merged comedy and music into improvisational skits. Other favorites of the era included talking horses, friendly dolphins, and Gilligan's Island.

While the results provide strong evidence for the link between entertainment preferences and these personality traits, these findings may not generalize to broader segments of society. In particular, there are significant age differences in entertainment preferences. Moreover, the entertainment genres that people prefer can vary widely, so future research should address this.

Although research has focused on entertainment as a means of enjoyment, it is important to recognize that it is a consuming activity. This makes it an opportunity for people to engage in a productive way. At the same time, it can be a source of diversion. Furthermore, entertainment can be a way to passively consume products. Many entertainment products are produced in an effort to entertain. Consequently, it is not surprising that people have different preferences for genres of media.

Another area of interest is the relationship between entertainment preferences and personality traits. Researchers have used self-reports to measure individual preference for a variety of TV shows and movie genres. In addition, informant reports on personality were available for a community sample. When paired with self-reports, these results were found to be quite similar. Thus, these studies provide a solid basis for developing hypotheses about the link between entertainment preferences and personality.
