4 min read

Nestled in the lap of the rugged Aravalli range in the State of Rajasthan, India lies the majestic Sariska Tiger Reserve. Spread over almost 882 square Km, this pristine wildlife sanctuary is a heaven for the critically endangered Bengal Tiger. Sariska stands out not only as evidence of the Government’s commitment to tiger or wildlife conservation but also as an example of how a poacher's paradise could be turned into a prominent national park.

You can visit Sariska National Park anytime but 1st October to 31st March is the best period for visiting Sariska. You can also book safaris and other facilities in advance online.

A brief history of wildlife conservation

Sariska was declared a national park and wildlife sanctuary in 1955. It got the status of a tiger reserve in 1978. As a part of the Government of India’s Project Tiger Initiative, Sariska Tiger Reserve was a remarkable step in safeguarding the endangered population of the Bengal tiger. The job was not easy or smooth sailing. Poaching, loss of jungle, and human-wildlife conflict were the primary barriers to conserving tigers. There was a time when Sariska lost almost all its tigers to poaching.

To overcome this situation, the Central and State Governments joined efforts. They included local communities in this initiative. Stringent anti-poaching initiatives were taken. Focus was made on habitat restoration and active participation of local communities.

Today, Sariska Tiger Reserve is a safe habitat of over 30 majestic Bengal tigers. Jungle safari was introduced to make this national park popular among the world of tourists and wildlife photographers. Apart from Bengal tigers, Sariska is a natural habitat of sambar deer, chital, langurs, wild boars, leopards, and dozens of other wild animals. During your jungle safari, you will have a close encounter with these wild animals. You will also find
hundreds of different species of colorful birds. These are all the years of efforts of Government authorities and local communities.

Enjoy with jungle safari

Jungle safari is the most popular activity in Sariska. Depending on the number of members in your group, you can book a gypsy safari or canter safari. The newest addition is the hot air balloon safari for an aerial view of the whole Sariska National Park. The good news is you can visit this amazing place in Aravalli by pre-booking your safari.

  • The gypsy safari starts from both Sariska and Tehla gates for 3 hours. It covers zones 1,2 and 3. You can book a morning or afternoon slot. A single gypsy accommodates a maximum of 6 tourists. The pre-booking includes one nature guide, one experienced driver, and permits for all.
  • If the group is large with more than 6 tourists, you can book a canter. This safari starts from Sariska gate only. It covers zones 1,2, and 3. Morning and afternoon safaris are also available in canter safari. You can book any one of them for 3 hours.
  • Sariska National Park Hot air balloon safari offers a rare opportunity to see the whole Sariska Tiger Reserve from a high altitude. Observing the lush green forest, wildlife, lake, and beautiful birds from the sky is both adventurous and memorable.
