Bologna will help you select your classes upon arrival. Study Center provides course evaluations and professor recommendations from past students for your reference. In the fall one course is taught by a UC faculty member on a topic in Italian culture at the UCEAP Study Center, but you will take all other program courses at the University of Bologna. Most courses in this program are listed as an upper-division, however, some introductory courses may be listed as a lower-division.
University of Bologna
In English, the choice of courses is much less than the choice of courses taught in Italian. Courses in English are not available in psychology, and very few in biology and communication. Courses in English are in selected areas of literature, international relations and political science, history, Italian studies, legal studies, digital humanities, economics, business, statistics, engineering and science, and other fields. Most courses taught in English are at an advanced level, so you should have a strong academic background in the fields you want to study in Bologna. Advanced Laura Magistrale courses in business administration, economics and engineering are particularly challenging and require careful course selection. UCEAP recommends against enrolling in more than two business administration and economics courses in a term. For an overview of the types of courses offered in English please review the previous courses offered in English documentation under the Listings and Resources section below.
In Italian, the University of Bologna offers courses in most UC education majors and has excellent opportunities for students in art history, communications, Italian, global studies, film studies, history, literature, philosophy and political science.
If you participate in the fall program, early exit exams may be required. The fall semester at the University of Bologna lasts until January, and many fall courses only hold exams in January. If instruction is extended to January, early exams will not be an option. If you are attending in the fall, you must coordinate with the UCEAP study center to determine the availability of courses in your field of study that allow early exams. Leaving at the end of December means taking the exam outside the official exam period, and not all faculty members will be willing to arrange this. Solve this problem in the UCEAP study center early in the semester.
Academy of Fine Arts courses
In English, the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts (Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna) offers an introduction to mosaics course each fall and spring semester. This popular course is open to all students, even if you have no background in Italian or art.
