Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS distribution update has been compiled, which includes changes related to hardware support improvements, Linux kernel and graphics stack updates, installer and loader bug fixes. Also included are topical updates for several hundred packages related to fixing vulnerabilities and issues affecting stability. Similar updates to Ubuntu Budgie 22.04.3 LTS, Kubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 22.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 22.04.3 LTS, Lubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 22.04.3 LTS, and Xubuntu 22.04.3 LTS are presented at the same time.
The release includes some improvements backported from the Ubuntu 23.04 release:
- Added packages with Linux kernel version 6.2 (Ubuntu 22.04's base kernel is 5.15).
- Updated graphics stack components, including Mesa 22.3.6, which were tested in the Ubuntu 23.04 release. Added fresh versions of video drivers for Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA chips.
- Updated versions of some packages such as cloud-init 23.2.1, ceph 17.2.6, containerd 1.6.12, dpdk 21.11.3, openvswitch 2.17.7, openldap 2.5.15, ovn 22.03.2, GCC 12.3.0, mutter 42.9, gnome-shell 42.9, gtk4 4.6.9, libadwaita 1.1.7.
- Improved support for RISC-V platform. Added support for VisionFive and Nezha boards.
For desktop builds (Ubuntu Desktop), the new kernel and graphics stack are offered by default. For server systems (Ubuntu Server), the new kernel is added as an option in the installer. It only makes sense to use the new builds for new installations - systems installed previously can get all the changes present in Ubuntu 22.04.3 through the regular update installation system.
Recall that to deliver new versions of the kernel and graphics stack applies a rolling model of update support, according to which backported kernels and drivers will be supported only until the release of the next corrective update of the LTS branch of Ubuntu. Thus, the Linux 6.2 kernel offered in the current release will be supported until the release of Ubuntu 22.04.4, which will offer the kernel from Ubuntu 23.10. The originally shipped 5.15 base kernel will be supported throughout the five-year maintenance cycle.
To rollback Ubuntu Desktop to the 5.15 base kernel, run the command:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic
To install the new kernel in Ubuntu Server you should run:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-22.04
