Always suffering from many different aspects, Batman could have hung up the mantle for a specific fact that DC Comics wanted to highlight.
Whenever there is talk of tormented superheroes, one name comes to mind above many. It is true that the fact of having the responsibility to protect humanity or an entire city makes the protagonists of superhero editorials have many headaches. However, there are some who are more tormented than others by some actions they have committed or what their villains have done to them.

We're basically being introduced to Tim Drake sneaking into a Gotham rich party, where everything spirals out of control and he ends up getting shot in the throat. Our hero comes to his aid and tries to cut him off from Batman and take him to a hospital, flashing back to the mythical moment of Jason Todd's death.
All these memories for Batman are one stone after another that remember how bad it was when the Joker ended the life of his pupil. Our hero makes a tremendous effort remembering all that and commenting that it was the moment that he really considered whether to stop doing all this and show his true identity, so that they would know that Jason Todd had died as a hero. Although he came to think of it, he never did, mainly because his mission to cleanse Gotham of all the rotten villains and corruption made him look forward.
Our hero's flashback to this situation is palpable because everything reminds him of what happened with Jason. However, the pain and punishment that Bruce has suffered for having allowed this fact that left him marked for life has been dealt with on more than one occasion. No matter how much time passed, Batman has always had this notch in his suit and he has not been able to remedy it in any way, since his values and his code of honor forbid him to act in another way, being one of the main attractions that can come to have.
What would have happened in a DC Comics without Bruce Wayne?
It has been seen on some occasions what would have happened in DC Comics if Batman, for whatever reason, was not there. The fact that this figure was already created within Gotham would lead to several individuals trying to follow in his footsteps, whether they are his own pupils or other characters who had nothing to do with it, depending on the universe you see. Either way, Batman is a hero who carries a lot of responsibility and lives up to an incredibly tough code of his own, even for himself.
