What is Web Development?

Web development is the process of writing code or programming that makes a website work the way the owner wants it to. It focuses mostly on the parts of website development that aren't about the design, like coding and writing markup.

Web development includes everything from simple text pages to complex web-based apps, social network apps, and e-commerce systems, and it can be done by anyone.

The hierarchy of web development is as follows:

  • Client-side coding.
  • Database technology.
  • Server-side coding.

The majority of web developers create websites using:

  • HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
  • JavaScript.

HTML is the building block of a website's structure. It lays out a page's layout, format, and important parts by defining the blocks that define those parts. This would make a site that didn't work until CSS and JavaScript were added. It takes a lot of code to make even small changes to the design, like changing the color of a button in HTML.

Web content can be designed with CSS by using a small set of shared files to make it look the way that it does. If you want to make the buttons on your website a different color, you only need to change one CSS file.

JavaScript is used to control how different parts of a website work together. It can make icons and drop-down menus more fun and interesting by adding animations, games, and other interactive elements to them.

There are three types of web developers: front-end, back-end, and full-stack. A front-end developer is in charge of how the website looks and how it works. He or she also links the parts of the website.

There are backend developers who take care of things like web hosting, databases, and apps. Back-end developers may need to use other server-side languages like Python, Ruby, Java, and PHP to solve server-side problems. These languages can help them do this.

Full-stack developers are people who can do both front-end and back-end work at the same time.

Different Responsibilities of Web Developer.

For the most part, the duties of an internet programmer are not limited to writing scripts. According to the bureau book, a variety of responsibilities may fall under your purview, including, but not limited to:

Client Meeting.

If you work for a small company or as a freelancer, you may have to meet with customers in person to fully understand their needs and communicate with them throughout the project.

Customer Researcher.

After conducting extensive customer research and surveys, you may need to look at this data yourself in order to understand the context.

Partner with Other Team.

It's likely that your company will have a mix of product designers, data analysts, project managers, and UX designers on board. You'll probably have to work with each of these groups at some point to make sure the site looks good and collects the right kinds of data from users.

Quality Testing.

The testing phase of the development process is a major component. Before your site or app goes live, you'll conduct your own testing and troubleshooting of your own work.

How Much Does a Web Developer Earn?

This is what web developers in the United States make on average each year. If you work as a top web developer, you can sometimes make more than $150,000 a year. What you make will depend on where you work, what industry you work in, and how long you have worked.

It looks like there will be a lot more growth in these jobs than normal through 2030, according to the statistics. There has been a lot of growth in e-commerce, which has led to a lot more jobs for web developers. Companies are becoming more and more dependent on working websites that work on a wide range of devices to do business.

How to Become a Web Developer?

If you want to be an entry-level web developer, you don't always need a formal education. Some web developers have an associate's or bachelor's degree in website design or computer science.

Others learn how to code and design websites on their own, and they work for companies that make websites. You can be more competitive for jobs if you have a college degree, but having a strong portfolio can show that you have the skills that employers want to hire you for. As a web developer, there are some steps you can take if you want to do that.

Build web developer skills.

Employers and clients usually look for web developers to have certain skills that show they can meet the needs of a website. This is a list of skills to work on if you want to be a web developer:

Technical Skills.

  • Coding
  • Technical SEO
  • Visual Design
  • Responsive Design
  • Version Control.

Workplace Skills.

  • Communication
  • Detail-Oriented
  • Problem-Solving
  • Customer Service
  • Organization.

Computer science or web design might be good options for you if you want to go to college.

Even though you don't always need a college degree to get a job in web development, it can help. There are some majors that might be better for you if you're already in school or if you're thinking about getting a degree. If you want to work on the back end of websites, think about getting a computer science degree. Front-end development might be more interesting to you than web design or user experience. You might want to get a degree in these fields to learn more about them (UX).

Take a course in web development.

You don't have to go to school to become a web developer. The skills you need can be learned by yourself. To learn programming languages like HTML, JavaScript, or CSS, you can take a class. Then, you can use what you learn to make your own website.

The University of Michigan has an online course in web development called Web Design for Everybody: Basics of Web Development and Coding. You can learn new skills while working on projects for your own portfolio.

Watch this video on JavaScript interactivity to get a sense of what the class is like.

Built a portfolio of web development work.

A web developer's portfolio is often the most important part of his or her résumé, and this is why. This collection of projects shows potential employers what you can do. Describe the types of projects that show the kind of work you want to do. The code should be annotated so that the reader can see how you came up with the ideas you're writing.

Get certified.

Earning a certification can show potential employers that you have the skills they need. ACE, MCSD, AWS Certified Developer, and Zend Certified PHP Engineer are just a few of the general and vendor-specific certifications that you can choose from.
