What Is Clamshell Mode On MacBook?

4 min read

There are many ways to set up your workstation. Some prefer to use the MacBook screen and an external monitor to maximize screen space. If you don't need extra screen space or you have multiple monitors, you might consider putting your MacBook aside to make your desk more space.

You can use your MacBook in clamshell mode if the lid is closed. You will need an external monitor, keyboard, and trackpad.

What is the clamshell mode?

Closed-clamshell mode, also known as a closed-display mode on Macs, allows you to use your Mac even when it's hidden away.

You can convert your laptop to a desktop computer by closing the lid. All you need is an external display, a USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard, a USB mouse or Bluetooth mouse and an AC adapter.

When operating in clamshell mode, overheating may occur. Open Macs heat up through the keyboards and surfaces. This heat can be prevented by closing your Mac when it isn't in use.

This is how you can use Mac's closed clamshell mode

First, plug in your external monitor to power it up and then connect it to your Mac using a USB-C cable.

Your Mac should be open while you're still using it. Make sure your external keyboard is working properly.

These steps should be followed if you use a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse:

  • Click the Apple menu at the top of the menu bar.
  • Choose System Preferences > Bluetooth.
  • Verify that Bluetooth is turned on and the device can be found. Check out this article to learn more about troubleshooting Bluetooth issues on your Mac.

Once you have successfully connected your external keyboard/mouse, you can return to the Apple menu from the upper left corner.

  • Open System Preferences.
  • Go to Energy Saver > Power Adapter.
  • To Never, set "Turn display off After."

Last but not least, make sure to connect your Mac to a power source. Your external monitor can't be used if your Mac isn’t on. When you close your Mac, your display will appear on the external monitor.

In a clamshell, turn your MacBook on/off

Your MacBook can be shut off when the lid is closed. It can then go to sleep, restart, or shutdown as follows:

You can sleep, restart, or shut down your computer by selecting the Appick menu.

It is as easy as moving the lid with your mouse or keyboard. You must lift the lid and press power to turn on your MacBook.

Apps that will prevent your Mac from going to sleep

Your Mac can be prevented from entering sleep mode by adjusting its lid to prevent it from doing so.

You can also download third-party software to accomplish this task. Here are some:

  • Insomniac
  • Amphetamine
  • Caffeinated

Before downloading any third-party app, read reviews. Do not download malware from unknown vendors.

MacBook External Monitor Black Screen Issue in Clamshell Mode

For most users, the clamshell mode will also make the external monitor screen black. This is common when the clamshell mode's saved display settings are not supported.

Your MacBook used an external monitor before. But you changed its settings, and it is now black.

This problem can be solved by changing your display settings, so your monitor supports it while you are still in clamshell mode. It isn't easy to see the screen when it isn't there.

Remote access software TeamViewer can be used to work around this problem. You can access your MacBook using your smartphone's

TeamViewer mobile application even if you don’t have a separate PC or laptop.

These programs can't be installed if your Mac isn't in clamshell mode. You can still use the built-in monitor to check what's happening. Close the lid and reconnect to the external monitor.

You can access your Mac remotely from a separate device by changing the display settings.
