What Makes Home Equipment Durable?

3 min read

First of all, the term “durable,” is used to refer to a piece of equipment or item that can withstand pressure, wear, or damage. In economics, a durable good or equipment does not quickly wear out, or in more specific terms, one that yields utility over time instead of being consumed in a single use.

From common knowledge, since there are durable products or equipment, that means that there are also types of equipment that are not durable (non-durable). When it comes to the home, most homeowners don’t like changing home equipment often; most of the time, it’s because these types of equipment cost a lot of money to purchase.

It’s not uncommon to make the mistake of buying a product or a piece of equipment that’s not durable only to end up regretting your decision. The reason most people make this error is because they don’t know what to look out for in durable equipment.

That’s why in today’s article, we’ll be looking at some of the things you should look out for when buying equipment that tells you that they are durable.

What Makes Home Equipment Durable?

Durable goods, also known as durables are goods, products, or equipment that have a long life cycle (usually more than 3 years), and customers do not have to purchase the goods or products often.

Asides from lasting longer, the durability of equipment can be seen or acknowledged when the equipment doesn’t break down or wear out easily or quickly so that it won’t be purchased frequently.

Durable products can be used multiple times—if a product has a one-time usage or single-use or it doesn’t last long (usually less than three years); it’s a non-durable product. However, durable equipment tends to be expensive and some people can’t afford them; so, they are sometimes hired rather than bought.

Types of Durable Goods

Durable goods are classified into two main categories: consumer durable goods and business durable goods.

Consumer durable goods

This category of goods refers to those goods that are bought by households or individuals with the hope that the goods or products bought will serve them for years so that they won’t have to buy them often. Home equipment falls into this category of goods. Examples of consumer durable goods include TV stands, cars, books, electronics, etc.

Business durable goods

Business durable goods are goods or products that entrepreneurs need if they must effectively and successful run or manage their firms. Equipment and machinery are required to start certain types of businesses—metalworking machinery, engines, and industrial equipment are needed by certain types of companies to operate.

Normally, firms need trucks, buses, and cars to transport goods that are required for production and to transport the finished goods to their customers. Business owners often require laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones to not only control their businesses but also track their success.

This category also includes furniture used by businesses, including the ones that landlords rent out to tenants.
