Mulayam S Yadav spent 19 months in jail when Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency in the 1970s.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, when demonstrations and agitations over the Mandal Commission, established to identify the socially or educationally backward classes in India, were at their height, the former wrestler emerged as the centre of UP politics. Mulayam Singh and Lalu Prasad Yadav of Bihar, both from lower castes, rose to power as protest leaders at this time.

In addition to his seven terms in the Lok Sabha, Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected to the state assembly eight times and the Lok Sabha seven times.

In his condolences for Mulayam Singh Yadav, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled how he was a "key soldier for democracy" during the Emergency, which was enforced by the previous Congress administration in the mid-1970s.
