Sports Simulation: Which Sports Can You Do Virtually?

Sports Simulation: Which Sports Can You Do Virtually?
5 min read

With almost constant advances in technology, there a range of sports that you can now partake in virtually. This article will take a look at some of the most popular sports to take part in virtually, and how easy it is to get involved without leaving home.

Cycling

One of the most popular and engaging sports to partake in virtually is cycling. In recent years, technology has allowed cyclists to “ride” with friends and people around the world, utilising platforms such as Zwift. The popularity of the virtual side of cycling was also enhanced by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, meaning people couldn’t meet up with others to cycle like they normally would.

During the pandemic, many professional cyclists utilised virtual cycling to keep fit and provide entertainment and allow people to join their activities and compete with them.

Developments have also allowed actual competitions to take place using virtual platforms, such as the Zwift Racing League. Events like this have turned something that was initially very useful and effective as a home workout into a social scene and also a competitive environment.

Golf

One of the nation’s favourite past times is golf, a sport which has made the leap into the virtual world. Playing 18 holes can be time-consuming and weather dependent, sometimes a bit wet and cold! Well, golf simulators have changed the game and allow you to have a round without the need to head out to the course – you can even do it from home.

Similar to cycling, you can play golf online with your friends and compete, just like you would on the traditional course. There are tournaments and competitions available to add even more interest to the guaranteed fun, and you can even boost your player ranking – think of it as a virtual handicap!

A range of golf simulators are available and can suit various needs, wants and budgets. Options include indoor and outdoor machines, perfect options for kids, and even ones specialising on aspects of your game such as putting.

Skiing

Virtual skiing has come a long way since the Ski Jump game on Wii Fit back in 2007, which brought the sport, in the form of hilarious little characters, into the homes of millions. Skiing can be done from home and virtually, although it may need more space than a running simulator or virtual cycling machines.

Useful for athletes training for competitions, or even if you want to brush up on your skills ahead of a gap year ski course, the development of technology such as the SnowSports Simulator means you don’t have to wait for the snow to hit! Practice your slalom and techniques before you hit the snow, or if you have never been skiing, what a fantastic and practical way to get a taste of it.

Running

Of course, treadmills in homes and gyms have been around for years and are one of the most commonly thought of activities when considering which sports you can do indoors. A common frustration with the standard treadmill is that it can be difficult to alleviate boredom – after all, you are looking at the same view, or even a wall, for hours. No amount of music or podcasts can help with that.

Bringing a more real-life and engaging aspect to indoor running, there are many platforms available to link up with friends and training partners. They are ideal when the weather makes training outside less than enjoyable, and even the standard treadmill is available all year round, as they can be utilised in a place that is most convenient for the user.

The smart treadmill adds a different level of benefit and engagement to the indoor running workout. Virtually run across some of the most stunning scenery or places that are otherwise off-limits due to time or geographical constraints.

Virtual sports are very much going to be part of the future. With various sports able to be trained in and competed in remotely, who knows what the future of the technology will be and how far it will develop? Virtual Olympics, anyone?
