There were plenty of things to consider. However, KFC was an excellent choice for someone who was a foodie like me. But being an insider has taught me a lot about the ways that fast-food businesses work, and a lot of the things I learned will be a shock to you.

For fast food companies, it's actually cheaper to provide us with more food and less. We believe we're getting a bargain when we purchase the combo meals, but it's only pennies to create the food we see coming out of the window. The real cost is in the marketing, and the more money they are able to earn from each purchase, the better, regardless of the number of empty calories they'll need to keep in the bag.

Here are a few secrets that the fast-food industry does not want you to be aware of. Learn them, shed weight, and don't forget to read the new 50 Ways to Lose 10 Pounds Fast.

  1. They would like to control the items you purchase

In the hamburger chain, "combination meals" make the largest portion of 31 per cent of purchases. The average combo contains 1,200 calories. About 1/3 of those calories come from already-determined meals that the restaurant has chosen for you.

  1. They all taste alike due to reasons.

Have you noticed that different components of a fast food meal have the same taste? The fries, the burger as well as the onion rings even the shake -- they all taste similar to "fast food." That's because they're all made in order to appeal to palates to entice us to eat more food--not too meaty, but not too much vegetable-y. The part of our brain known as the hypothalamus, which responds to food, has evolved to desire various sweet, salty, and bitter flavours, which is why we consume a wide assortment of food items. Fast food is designed to satisfy these cravings, which means there is no need for something else (like grapefruit, for instance).).

  1. Fast food is designed for fast consumption.

It takes around 20 minutes to wait to get the "I'm full" signal to travel from your stomach and your brain. The faster you eat this food, the more of that food you'll have to buy and consume because your brain doesn't realize you're full.

  1. Fast food doesn't require a lot of chewing

Another way to encourage people to take in more is that the most hefty eaters consume their meals 11.9 times prior to swallowing them, while those who chew the least 14.8 times, as per one study.

  1. There will be fries even if there's no need for them.

It's much more difficult to refuse an offer if it originates from someone else, as per an Eastern Illinois University study that found that people consume 85 per cent more if servers give them more.

  1. There's nothing special about you.

People tend to choose unhealthy restaurants because they believe they're eating out to celebrate the sake of a "special occasion." Remember that you're at this spot every single day, so just the fact that there's a clown in there does not mean it's a special occasion.

  1. "Medium" is large

Duke University researchers discovered that companies often encourage their customers to purchase more sodas by increasing the amount of ounces contained in ALL sodas. This is because consumers subconsciously choose the middle option, and the bigger the "medium," the more they'll charge for it.

  1. The food of today has more calories than food that was popular in the 1980s.

In actual fact, we consume more calories from eating out than we did a decade ago. Take a look at how our food consumption has increased:

  • Pizza: 70 per cent more calories
  • Cheeseburger: 75 per cent more calories
  • French fries are 190 per cent higher in calories
  1. Your soda could be dirtier than an ordinary toilet

It is notoriously hard to keep clean, which makes them petri dishes. In a prize-winning science project, 12-year-old Floridian Jasmine Roberts compared the levels of bacterial contamination in the ice water and the toilet water from fast-food establishments. It was discovered that 70 per cent of the time, the ice from fast-food restaurants was dirtier than water from the toilet. In a few instances, the ice had been tested positively for E. Coli bacteria, which originates in human waste. This isn't the only reason to avoid fountain drinks. Take a look at the 70 Most Popular Sodas, ranked by how toxic they are!

  1. Your meat is cleaned chemically

The chemicals we usually think of as cleaning chemicals are intentionally used in fast-food food meat. Why? Ammonium hydroxide compounds can cause harm to the e. bacteria and other organisms. They also decrease acids in meats as well as other food items and make it hard for pathogens to live. Does the practice pose a risk? The USDA confirms this. Does eating a burger containing chemicals seem appealing? It's not particularly.
