3 Fun Valentine's Day Activities Perfect for Those With Dementia
3 min read

Valentine's Day, or the day of love, is typically reserved for couples to enjoy doing activities together. They'll go on romantic dates, get each other gifts, and simply want to spend time with the person that they love most in the world. However, Valentine's Day isn't just about romantic love; it can be about all types of love. Whether that love is romantic, familial, or friendly, all love deserves a seat at the table on Valentine's Day.

When you struggle with dementia, participating in these fun holiday activities is difficult, but that doesn't mean that you can't participate at all! Here are a few fun, easy ways for seniors with dementia to still enjoy Valentine's Day:

1. Flower arrangements

Everyone loves flowers and flower arrangements, and seniors who struggle with dementia might find it calming or relaxing to be able to create their own flower arrangements. You could invite your senior loved one to sit outside with you as you pick the flowers for the arrangement, or you could invite them to do their own with fresh - or even fake - flowers. They're sure to love the bright colors and the ability to work with their hands, and you'll be able to display their handiwork afterward! Making a floral wreath for their apartments at the best senior living communities in MI is sure to brighten their day.

2. Making sweet treats and candies

Sweet treats are the best part of Valentine's Day, so why not involve your senior loved one in making those treats? Silicone molds are perfect for making chocolate candies, and making treats like cake pops is easy for any age - or dexterity - to complete. You might be surprised by how capable of a helper your senior loved one is, and at the end of the day, you'll be able to enjoy your delicious creations together.

3. Enjoy romantic music

Music is a way to connect everyone. People of all ages, languages, and backgrounds are connected with a shared love of music, and that doesn't change even with dementia. If you want to involve your senior in some of your fun Valentine's Day activities, play some music.

Additionally, key memories are often linked to music, so playing some music that they might be familiar with has the ability to trigger some memories in your loved one. It isn't a guarantee, of course, but it's a pleasant thought to think that you might have a special moment to share with your loved one.
