7 Valuable moving tips. You can move yourself!
5 min read

Our entire summer was almost entirely devoted to the move. Now that this is finally behind us, we can look back with pride on this busy time. After all, we did it all ourselves without the help of a moving service. In this article, I share our experience and give useful moving tips that you may not think of so quickly. Because moving? You can do that yourself!

7 handy moving tips

I've moved so many times now that I can call myself an expert. Admittedly, I usually moved to another house in the same city. Still, I now know what is and isn't useful to do before a move. Some useful moving items, for example. And what you should pay attention to when preparing a move. These are my must-have moving tips:

Tips for Moving

Tip 1 – Good preparation

Good preparation is half the job. Make a moving checklist for yourself. It is easy to do digitally, such as with the Todoist app. You can make different lists here, such as: 'old house chores' and 'arrange for key collection,' and you can link a date and person to it.

Write down all the mail that comes in and sit down to give all senders a moving message with your new address after a while. And also send friends and family a moving card!

Tip 2 – Clean up

A move is a perfect time to start with a clean slate. Clean out all your closets and get rid of what you no longer need. Take it to the thrift store, put it on Marktplaats, or do like me: Start a small flea market! Post ads on social media and let people shop with you by appointment. It takes relatively little effort, you have extra pocket money (moving is already expensive enough), and you have to pack less stuff!

Tip 3 – Pack

This is one of my sustainable moving tips: Be creative with packing. Instead of buying new moving boxes, you can also ask the supermarket to save boxes for you. Banana boxes are ideal for heavy items such as books and crockery.

Save bubble wrap from online orders and ask your entire circle of friends to do the same. Still not enough? Then wrap fragile things in tea towels, towels, or even clothing. Make a note of this on the box so that you don't accidentally break your cups when you think you're unpacking your clothes.

Unplug refrigerators and freezers for at least one day before moving and leave the doors open so they can dry. Store your cold items in a chilled packaging box with a cooling pack that is made for that purpose.

Tip 4 – Transfer or save?

Can't you immediately move into your new home? Then pack a suitcase with all your important necessities. Think of favorite clothes, personal care products, medicines, and contraception. Use the same checklist when you go on vacation.

You can also temporarily store items you do not need immediately in rented storage space.

Tip 5 – Moving party

In America, they have paint parties. Parties where the new resident invites friends and family to help with chores in exchange for drinks and snacks.

Of course, you can also organize a moving party yourself. Arrange festive face masks for the handymen, put on some pleasant music, and assign everyone a separate room to sand, paint, or clean.

Tip 6 – Carrying

Of course, it is nice to let experienced movers from a moving service do the work. But you save yourself a lot of money by lugging everything yourself. Moreover, you don't have to go to the gym for a while, because you won't have time for that during a move.

Place all boxes in the right areas as much as possible and unpack everything per room. This way, you keep an overview. Moreover, it is wonderful to retreat to a room that is already (almost) finished and where familiar things surround you.

And maybe not one of my most sustainable moving tips, but is your washing machine a bit older, and you don't feel like moving it? Ask if the new residents of your old home want to take over the washing machine. You can then order a new one yourself, which will be brought to the right floor and installed immediately upon delivery.

Tip 7 – Relax

As tempting as it is to keep going, sometimes take some time for yourself. Don't forget that moving is very stressful and it is therefore very important to relax. Take a nice bath (possibly with friends if your bathroom is still being renovated), go for a walk in nature, or have lunch outside the door. Everything to shake off all the dust for a moment so you can continue with fresh courage!
