The base camp of the trek is the village called Grahan village, and it is a tiny hamlet quite close to Kasol. Because many people visiting Kasol do not know of this place, it remains a peaceful and seldom touched off beat location with peace and tranquility of nature intact.

LOCATION

It is located in the Parvati valley of Himachal Pradesh and falls under the district of Kullu. The name literally stands to mean a frozen lake in the local language of the original Himachal people who stay in these villages. There, in reality is a frozen lake on the track that leads to the pass and this pass is named after this lake.

HOW TO REACH

  •       The closest airport is the Bhuntar airport, in the town of Bhuntar. It about 10 kms from Kullu. The airport is also named the Kullu-Manali airport.
  •       You can reach the base via road too and it is 30kms from of Kasol. You can also arrive at Bhunter from Delhi by NH1 National Highway through Chandigarh or Ambala. There are local as well as private buses for the same.
  •       I case you want to avail the train, it is quite difficult. If you are visiting from far away, you need to reach Delhi or Chandigarh at first and from here you have to take a bus or a car. Joginder Nagar is the nearest station.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best months to visit the pass is from mid-April till November. Visiting before May will let you experience snow in the region. Thus, you will also be able to see the lake frozen and a lot of huge glaciers. However, going sometime between May to October will show you the panoramic views because during this time the sky mostly remains clear. The place is most widely visited in the months of May and June.

BUDGET

This trek may be bit hard on your budget if you are not earning, but verry much doable if you can save money. There are tones of websites and travel agencies at your service that lets you enjoy the trek with a budget of 6-7k. This is usually the minimum price. This often includes 3 meals along with accommodation. However, this is includes only the expenses from Kasol till the pass and back. You need to put extra money for reaching kasol and coming back.

ITINERARY

The trek usually starts from Kasol in groups of a few trekkers. You can roam about the town during your first day and the trek starts from Kasol to reach Grahan village. The village is the base camp. It is a very small hamlet cuddled away from the noise and crowd of Himachal , people here have a peaceful way of life. The trek till this village is surrounded by meadows and you may get to watch many species of birds.

Next day set out for Min Thach. The Kanwar Wildlife sanctuary should be visited too.

Here, the trekkers usually camp for the next night. Explore the place and you will be able to see the Nagaru and Sar top. There will be huge fields with herds of cattle all around.

Go for stargazing at night, especially if you are trekking during the summers.

Next day, trek towards Nagaru and you will reach staggering height of 12500 ft by now. This is undoubtedly the highest and coldest campsite of the whole journey.

From here climb for a while to reach to the top and you will have your most awaited moment. The rolling landscape far below, with the of Beas river flowing, and Parvati and Chanderkhani’s views will be truly memorable.

Next day, get up early morning to see the sunrise from behind the mountain peak. Post breakfast you can plan your downwards journey via the Biskeri Thatch crossing Sar pass and Sainj Valley on the way.

Finally, trek to Barshaini, from there to Kasol. Sadly, the journey ends here.
