Analysis of the Cause of Continuous Crosscutting Machine Breakdown
Various factors have been studied and analysed that cause the continuous crosscutting machine to break down. Some of these factors are the type of saw used, the time of the day when the saw is used, the type of timber used, the number of cuts made by the saw and the number of hours the machine is on the job.

Using continuous time studies, a study was conducted to investigate the performance parameters of the sawing unit of a CTL harvester. Data were collected from the machines through the use of a datalogger, which was connected to CAN buses. The datalogger recorded machine parameters, including log length, and the diameter of the stem at each cutting position. The data collected were analysed to determine the duration of the cutting phases and fuel consumption.
The study showed that the time consumed in the pure cutting activity was higher than the time consumed during the guide bar movement. The duration of the crosscutting machine and felling cut were approximately similar. However, the absolute fuel consumption was higher in the cross-cutting process. This was because of the higher fuel consumption during the entire duration of the guide bar movements.
The average diameter of the stems accepted in the felling phase at both sites was larger. This means that the stems would require more fuel to cross-cut and fall.
Precautions when cutting crosscutting machine

You can also measure the distance between the blade of crosscutting machine for paper and the fence to determine the maximum width you can cut. You can do this by moving the saw unit to the end of the radial arm.
The next step is to set the upper guide and guard to within about 1/4 inch of the work. This should clear the entire width of the material without any jams.

Study on mechanised harvesting using CTL harvesters
Various studies have been conducted on the performance of mechanised harvesting operations using CTL (continuous crosscutting machine) harvesters. These studies have focused on different factors, such as the type of machine, operator experience, and technology level. They have also studied fuel consumption and the operation of the machines.
The objective of this study was to evaluate cutting machine duration and other performance parameters of a CTL harvester's sawing unit. It was also explored whether there were any opportunities to reduce diesel fuel consumption in the harvesting operation. The study was carried out on three sites in Central Finland, north of Jyvaskyla and Kyyjarvi, and near Saarijarvi.
The study was supported by the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking and the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The main data analysed included cutting duration, fuel consumption, and the movement of the guide bar. A datalogger connected to the CAN bus was used to collect and save data from the harvesting machine. In addition, an additional software package was installed on the machine, which recorded pre-defined machine parameters.
