If you've been looking to play Minecraft with your other gamers on the Apple TV now is the time to start getting excited. The most recent update to the Apple TV version of this popular game allows "Realms," Minecraft's subscription-based multiplayer system. This updated version also features Xbox Live authentication support, which allows players to access their linked avatars and character skins.

Realms accounts are like purchasing the Minecraft server. However, the account is maintained by Microsoft, so you don’t need to worry about hosting or IP addresses. You are in control of who can access your private Minecraft Realm. You don't have any worries about strangers visiting your Minecraft Realm, and then destroying it while you're creating a wildly imaginative recreation of King's Landing in Game of Thrones. For $3.99 and $7.99 respectively, you can create an entire realm for two or 10 players.

Owners of existing Realms subscriptions for Mac, Linux, or PC won't be able to play alongside their iOS and Apple TV brethren. There are two Realms systems that are available for PCs and one that is compatible with iOS and Android users. We reached out to find if plans exist to connect the two systems.

The procedurally-generated worlds of Minecraft deserve to be explored with others; now Apple TV and iOS fans have a chance to do just that... as long as they stick to their own platform.
